  11. 2001 Champion Township Comprehensive Plan • Goals: • To protect ecologically sensitive areas, including wetlands, flood plains and other areas that should be preserved from development. • To retain some open spaces to provide aesthetically pleasing vistas and surroundings for the community’s citizens.

  12. 2001 Champion Township Comprehensive Plan • Objectives: • To protect ecologically sensitive areas from intensive development, through zoning and other measures (i.e. CAUV Program, Transfer of Development Rights, Riparian Zones). • To encourage the public ownership of some wetlands, flood plains and streamside forests to prevent development in these sensitive areas and provide passive or active recreation facilities or public open spaces for community residents.

  13. 2001 Champion Township Comprehensive Plan • Recommendations: • Development in wetland areas of the township should be discouraged in favor of more suitable sites that will not endanger any plant or animal species. • Preservation of riparian zones or “streamside forests” should be encouraged to reduce erosion and water pollution and to protect natural habitat for local fish and wildlife. • Flood plain areas should not be developed in order to alleviate worse flooding problems associated with obstacles in the flood plains during heavy rainfalls and to prevent problems such as basement flooding or other property damage. • The township should also consider the use of some acreage not suitable for developed land uses (due to flood plains and wetlands) as public open space areas like local parks or nature preserves.
