  2. Before We Go • You will complete a scavenger hunt as you travel. This is to be turned in once you have finished your trip. • The items you are to locate will be identified with SH and a number (SH 1). • Also, as you travel, think about the places you visit. Once you have finished the trip, you will write a journal entry describing ONE of the places you “saw”.

  3. Let’s Get Started! Welcome to London, our first stop. Before we begin our trip to Canterbury, let’s explore some of the places here in London.

  4. London Attractions London has quite a few attractions that you need to see while we’re here. Take a few minutes to explore! Click on the link below, and then click on Start a Virtual Tour. (This is found under ATTRACTIONS.) On the left-hand side, select THREE attractions to visit. SH 1 – Write 3 facts about each of the attractions you visited. http://www.aviewoncities.com/london.htm

  5. Houses of Parliament Welcome to the House of Parliament! Also known as Westminster Palace, this is the meeting place of the House of Lords and the House of Commons. Click the Interactive map of Parliament. Visit the following places and answer the questions: SH 3 -- The Commons Chamber – What is Churchill’s Lucky Foot? SH 4 – The Lord’s Chamber – What are the Brass Gates? SH 5 – St. Stephen’s Hall & Chapel Cloister – For whom is the chapel reserved? http://www.parliament.uk/visiting/online-tours/

  6. Westminster Abbey Our next stop will be Westminster Abbey, the final resting place of Geoffrey Chaucer. As you spend time looking around, pay attention to the beautiful architecture. SH 6 – How many monarchs are buried at Westminster Abbey? SH 7 – Under the EVENTS tab, select 2014 Bell Ringing Days.   7. Harrod’s Department Store No trip is complete if you don’t do a little shopping. Let’s visit Harrod’s Department Store. Find an article of clothing that you like, and then convert to price from pounds to dollars using the currency converter. SH 8 – What item did you “buy”? SH 9 – How many Euros did it cost?   8. Rise and Shine! As we begin our journey to Canterbury, we will be traveling southeast from Southwark, a borough of London. (A borough is similar to a suburb in the US.) The link below will take you to a map of the cities and town the pilgrims from The Canterbury Tales would have traveled though. Stop in each one and see what Chaucer’s pilgrims might have seen.   9. Welcome to Canterbury! Arewethereyet?Arewethereyet?Arewethereyet?Arewe….YES! After a long, tiring trip, we have reached our destination, unlike Chaucer’s pilgrims.  Before we visit Canterbury Cathedral, let’s acquaint ourselves with some of the places here in the city. Get a good night’s sleep because we will have a busy day tomorrow at Canterbury Cathedral. Open “Canterbury – A Tourist’s Guide” for a tongue-in-cheek look at some “tourists” who have visited Canterbury. SH 11 – List 3 notable “tourists” from the guide. http://www.hillside.co.uk/tour/

  10. Our Final Destination On our final day of our trip, we will spend time at Canterbury Cathedral, the site of the Shrine of Thomas Becket. Click VISITING THE CATHEDRAL on the left, and then select VIRTUAL TOUR. Use the interactive floor plan to view the various areas. (Click on Open Floor Plan, select an area, then click on Close Floor Plan.) MAKE SURE to view the area labeled MARTYDOM.   11. Don’t Forget! • You will need to turn in your scavenger hunt and your travel journal to me once you have completed the trip. This will be for a grade, so it is important to get it to me.
