  13. Academic/industry partnership to simulate practical experience Structure of Presentation • Overview of HE STEM project. • Some lessons learned • The new simulation exercise

  14. Enhancing the opportunities derived from large cohorts of engineering students • Issues: • Too much work for 10credits • IT system did not cope • Compulsory module forced disinterested students engage – against their will. • Non-traditional teaching format worried some students • Final year module and potential to affect NSS score was a concern for the department The Simulation Exercise

  15. Enhancing the opportunities derived from large cohorts of engineering students • Solutions: • Too much work for 10credits - Split simulation over two modules • IT system did not cope – stop using IT system, rely on paper based system • Compulsory module forced disinterested students engage – against their will. – No current solution • Non-traditional teaching format worried some students – Introduce more teaching support • Final year module and potential to affect NSS score was a concern for the department – Include some elements in 2ndyr The Simulation Exercise

  16. Academic/industry partnership to simulate practical experience Structure of Presentation • Overview of HE STEM project. • Some lessons learned • The new simulation exercise

  18. Enhancing the opportunities derived from large cohorts of engineering students Group Formation 150+ Students Tender Exercise 2nd Year New Industry partner: Environment Agency Multiple Scenario Construction Management Simulation Exercise This presentation will focus on the 2nd year simulation exercise 3rd Year Dispute Resolution Contract Variations Contract Formation No Industry partner Revised Simulation Exercise

  19. Academic/industry partnership to simulate practical experience New 2nd year Simulation Exercise

  20. Academic/industry partnership to simulate practical experience • How it works: • EA acts as “Client” and UoP acts as “senior manager” in the tendering company • Lots of client documentation has been developed about the project • Lots of “company” pro-forma documents have been created for students to complete • Students submit a tender package to the “Client” as group and an individual portfolio of evident to the “senior manager” • Coursework assesses group interaction, communication and presentation - the exam assess knowledge and understanding

  21. Academic/industry partnership to simulate practical experience Taking on board student feedback Thank you for listening Any questions?
