Natural or Manufactured • Garbage may be produced by natural or manufactured processes. • Most garbage is manufactured.
How has shopping changed? • In the old general store, the merchant sold just about everything! Customers purchased large amounts because they went to town only a few times per year.
How were things packaged? • Items that were purchased at the store were wrapped in paper, or placed in burlap. There was not the plastic wrapping of today, nor as much paper packaging.
How have shopping habits changed? • People may go shopping several times per week because stores are easy to get to. • We have refrigerators and freezers to store food. • We have become used to using an object a few times and then throwing it away.
Leaves, Grass, and Branches • Have you noticed bags filled with leaves and brush near the curbsides? • Yard wastes (leaves, grass, and branches) make up a large part of what we people throw away.
Natural vs. Manufactured • Look at the items. Which ones are natural? Which ones are manufactured?
