  2. A. Society and family life • A. Society and family life changed to reflect the values of Islamic.

  3. A. Islamic Society • Islamic society • People throughout the Islamic empire lived their lives according to the Quran. • The Quran gave detailed instruction on how society should be organized and how people should live. • Slaves who converted to Islam had to be freed, but slaves also might become solider, household servant, artisans, or bureaucrats,(government officials).

  4. Roles Of Women • Women in nomadic societies had fewer rights than men. • The Quran says that women should be educated in should be allowed to earn a living, and should be able to inherit their father’s property. • The educated women in the Islamic empire wrote poetry and played instruments.

  5. B. Urban Center • Cities became highly organized centers of government, education, and culture.

Islamic Cities One of the most impressive building in an Islamic city was the mosque(a place of worship). one of the holiest sites in the Islamic world is the dome of rock(is a place were Jewish have there tradition). The bazaar grouped merchants based on their product, such as food, spices, cloth, and rugs.

  7. B. House of Wisdom • Muslims rejoiced in learning. • Muslims developed centers of learning throughout the empire where Arabs, Asians, and westerns scholars could share ideas. • The house of wisdom had a large library and an astronomical observatory.

  8. C. Cultural Life • Islamic contributions to learning brought many improvement.

  9. C. The Practice Of Medicine Sickness and disease were a part of life in the ancient world. Serious illness was taken care of in clean hospitals that were free to the public. The first pharmacies, or drug stores, developed in Baghdad during the ninth century.

Literature, History, and Philosophy • Islamic poets wrote poems of great beauty, and other Islamic writers told stories that are still read today. • Poetry had long been an important part of the Islamic world. • One philosopher and doctor in the Islamic empire, Ibn Sina became especially famous

Arts And Architecture • During this time, some of the most beautiful building in the world were designed and built by Islamic architects and building. • Islamic artists developed calligraphy (a type of visual art), the art of elegant writing. • Carpets from this region are also works of art that developed during this time.

  12. D. Persian Influence and Islamic Spain • Persian culture influence were strong during the Abbasid dynasty, and culture flourished in Islamic Spain.

  13. Persian Influences • The Islamic conquest of Spain began in 711 and was completed by 718. • The culture center of Islamic Spain, had a library that was set up by caliph al-Hakam 11, also known as al-mustansir • By the late 1200’s, however, the Spaniards had pushed the Muslims back.
