  1. Be ThankfulColossians 3:15-17 Fair Havens

  2. The life of a follower of Christ should be characterized by THANKFULNESS. • 1 Thessalonians 5:16–18 (NIV) 16 Be joyful always; 17 pray continually; 18 give thanks in all circumstances, for this is GOD’s WILL for you in Christ Jesus. • Easier to be thankful when things are good. • Hard to be thankful when things aren’t going so well. • How do we give thanks in ALL circumstances?

  3. Colossians 3:15b (NIV) - Be THANKFUL! • Having an attitude of THANKFULNESS begins with a change in our outlook on life. • Colossians 3:1-2 (NIV) - Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. • Colossians 3:12 (NIV) - “clothe ourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience.”

  4. Colossians 3:14 (NIV) - “And over all these virtues, put on love, which binds them together in perfect unity.” • LOVE holds the body of Christ together. • Conditions of Thankfulness: • A Thankful Heart is Where • Christ’s Peace Governs Us • A Thankful Heart is Where • Christ’s Word Guides Us • A Thankful Heart is Where • Christ’s Name Grounds Us

  5. A Thankful Heart is Where • Christ’s Peace Governs Us • Colossians 3:15 (NIV) - Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. • “rule” - means to act as an umpire. • When we face a conflict or a crisis in life, Christ’s peace is what makes the final call.

  6. Inner Peace: • The peace we need when our inner world is caving in. • Philippians 4:6,7 (NIV) 6 Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. 7 And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

  7. b. Relational Peace • The peace we need to have in our relationships with one another. • v.15 - since as members of one body you were called to peace. • Christ’s peace should characterize all our relationships • Romans 12:18 (NIV) - If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone.

  8. c. Eternal Peace • The peace we receive through faith when we put our trust in the Lord Jesus Christ for salvation. • Romans 5:1 (NIV) - Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. • Paul adds to v.15 - “And be thankful.” • A thankful heart is one where Christ’s peace governs us - His peace is our umpireto make the final call.

  9. A Thankful Heart is Where • Christ’s Word Guides Us • Colossians 3:16 (NIV) -Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom, and as you sing psalms, hymns and spiritual songs with gratitude in your hearts to God. • “the word of Christ” – God’s Word - words about Jesus Christ; words from Jesus Christ • “dwell in us” – to have permanent residence • “richly”– “in large amounts”

  10. A Thankful Heart is Where • Christ’s Name Grounds Us • Colossians 3:17 (NIV) - And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him. • Our speaking or our actions must be done “in the name of Jesus” • Christians - those identified through our spiritual citizenship “with Christ” • What we say and what we do “colours what people think of Jesus.”

  11. The name of Jesus Christ must ground us  it is foundational to our very identity. • In identifying ourselves with Jesus Christ we are to “give thanks to God the Father through him.” • When we live in the awareness of who we are in Christ, realizing what Jesus has done for us on the cross and everything God has given us in Christ our hearts should overflow with thankfulness.

  12. How are you going to remind yourself to be thankful? • God calls us to BE THANKFUL. • Thankfulness comes when we let Christ’s peace govern our behaviour. • Thankfulness comes when we let Christ’s word live in us deeply. • Thankfulness comes when we let Christ be the one who gives us worth and value because we have been identified with him. • Let’s give thanks to God through Christ in whatever we say or whatever we do.
