  2. Submitting a conference paper to ASEE • What does it mean? • A conference paper is a professional publication that academics use to communicate with each other. It’s a step easier / less strict than publishing a journal paper. • Conference papers are accompanied by a presentation (usually poster or PowerPoint) that you give in person at the conference. • ASEE maintains a “Publish to Present” Model which requires that authors present their work at the conference in order to be published in the proceedings. • You can write it alone or with co-authors, such as an advisor or peer. As a student, you are not required to have a faculty member on the paper (but you may do so if you wish). • Why should I? • Good to have publications on your resume • You get to talk about your work and get feedback • You can connect to other people who are doing similar or different things from you • If you are planning to do more with the paper (submit to a journal or make it part of a thesis) it’s a good way to get a headstart on it • Contributing to an active and engaging professional community ASEE Student Division

Submitting a conference paper to ASEE • How do I do it? • The basic process for ASEE submission is: • Submit an abstract (Oct 19th) • Abstract is peer-reviewed and approved or rejected • Submit a draft paper (Feb 1st) • Draft paper is peer-reviewed, commented on, approved or rejected • Revise paper and upload final version (March 21st) • Present paper at conference (June 26th-29th) • Use the Monolith system, more details later ASEE Student Division

  4. Submitting a conference paper to ASEE • Where should I submit it? • There are many different divisions available with different foci. We organize the Student Division (SD), but we have experience with others. It would be hard to comment on the specialties and policies of every division but here are some general ideas. • Here are some prominent divisions to check out: • Education Research and Methods (ERM) is the main division for engineering education research. • DEED – design education • WiE – women in engineering • URM – underrepresented minorities • LEES – liberal education (kind of focuses on cross-cutting diversity) • Each sub-discipline (Civil, Mechanical, Electrical) has a division. • Some of these are sort of competitive and high profile places to publish. • For more information about the divisions, visit: http://www.asee.org/member-resources/groups/divisions ASEE Student Division

  5. Submitting a conference paper to ASEE • Where should I submit it? • In general, SD is for student authors, undergraduate or graduate. We want to support student work, so we will try to give a lot of help on the abstract and paper submissions. Other divisions might be more likely to reject things that don’t fit what they are looking for. • SD might be a good place to try out giving your first presentation at the conference, or submitting a project you feel uncertain about. Once you have more experience and confidence in your project you might submit to one of the more high profile ones. • SD Call for Papers ASEE Student Division

Call for Papers • All division calls can be found here: • https://www.asee.org/conferences-and-events/conferences/annual-conference/2016/papers-management/call-for-papers • Student Division Call for Papers is a pdf on this page: • https://www.asee.org/uploads_public/conferences/session_owner/call_for_papers_file/0000/1144/2016_Call_for_Papers_final.pdf • “Tricks of the Trade” • Good for: current engineering students, TAs, people who want to get experience at the conference. • You can write about what you learned in a class project, how you improved something in a class you led, what tips you would have for students in your shoes, etc. • Student-led Research on Engineering Education • Good for: starting engineering education researchers, presenting work from a research methods class, finished projects. • You may have a class project or paper where you conducted an interview or survey, did some initial analysis, performed a literature review from a particular lens. You may want to share your work but not know how it would stack up for the whole conference. This is a good spot to try presenting research out in a lower pressure setting. ASEE Student Division

Call for Papers • Student Division Call for Papers • Engineering Education Graduate Research Symposium • A poster session with faculty mentors • Present your research ideas and directions for formative feedback • No paper required • Co-sponsored by ERM • Good for: students pursuing engineering education research who are in the beginning and middle stages of their research and can benefit from this sort of feedback. Put forward your own ideas (a work in progress paper argument, some directions on your thesis, an exploratory pilot study) and have a conversation about where the work is headed and where it could go. Student Division Call for Papers • Student authorship • Student authorship is strongly encouraged. • Student must be 1st / primary author to be considered for best paper award • Students can have faculty advisors on the paper if part of a larger project. But student single authorship and all-student joint authorships strongly encouraged-- Student Division makes a lot of sense for those papers • NOT purely technical papers!! • Must have an educational component. You could turn most all engineering projects into a “tricks of the trade” paper if you wanted– discuss the educational experience aspect. ASEE Student Division

  12. Monolith system quirks • You can edit an abstract as many times as you want before the abstract deadline. You can put up a placeholder and keep revising it if you get time. • You can do the same for draft papers. • NB: Program chairs have the ability to assign your abstract or draft paper for review at any time once it is first submitted, so make sure whatever you upload is at least “good enough.” • Final papers are NOT the same. Review Process • Double blind • Program Chair assigns reviewers who don’t see your name and affiliations. • The reviewers aren’t supposed to be able to be biased towards or against you based on any affiliations listed in your writing. • Reviewers do not know who the authors of a paper are • Authors do not know who reviewed their paper • Abstract and draft papers should be de-identified. Final draft of paper any identifiers you would like to include can be added back in. ASEE Student Division

  14. How to Write an Abstract • The abstract is a short (250-500 words) summary of your project, with all names and identifiers removed. Items to include: • Purpose of the research / paper • Context (e.g. class size, subject matter, assignment type) • Methodology (research methodology, or how you did what you did more broadly) • Results (can be preliminary / anticipated) • Findings / implications (can be preliminary / anticipated) • De-identifying suggestions • Your school → leave out, or “Major East Coast Research University” • Your name → leave out • Course name / course number → leave out for abstract, perhaps make up a fake one for the paper • Names of people involved → leave out for abstract, perhaps make up a pseudonym for the paper ASEE Student Division
