Why Napoleon?

-During the French Revolution,

Napoleon’s great military skills

won him quick promotions to

general.

-The Directory were weak, ineffective, and not readily supported by the French.

- Napoleon and his forces defeated the Austrians and forced them to give France most of northern Italy

Although successful,

Napoleon could not fight off

the British and decided his

expertise would be better

suited in France, politically

-Napoleon staged a coup

power against the directory

constitution-in theory to establish

his republic.

-In reality, it was a dictatorship
