  2. Location of the Han • The Han Dynasty was located in Eastern China from 206 B.C.E – 220 C.E

  3. Facts about the Han • The Han Dynasty was a period of economic prosperity • Gaodi Emperor; First emperor of the Western Han Dynasty • One of the greatest Han Dynasty achievements was the invention of paper.

  4. Society in the City • Nobles and ordinary Chinese lived in the city. • Nobles has big and comfortable homes with a courtyard and gate. • Ordinary people lived in small 1 story homes. • Women usually did not have their own rooms. Ordinary people had to work hard as opposed to the Nobles.

Society in the Country • Chinese farmers lived and grew their crops out in the country. • They worked hard from sunrise to sunset. • Rice was a huge crop for the south and the North grew wheat and millet. • Farmers lived in 2 storied homes. • Men between ages 20-50 had to serve the government for one month each year.

  7. Food • There was a great abundance of food due to a lot of farming and raising of animals by the peasants. • Diets consisted of chestnuts, pears, plums, peaches, melons, and bamboo shoots. • They also consumed geese, cows, sheep, camels and dogs.

Population Growth • They had an increase in urbanization, growth of industry, trade, and nationalization • The empire expanded westward to as far as the Tarim Basin. • They had trade routes which brought many new cultures to their empire. • There were remarkable advances in science and technology during the Han dynasty.

Culture • Education, culture, and science were huge during the Han Dynasty. • Rulers instituted a Confucian system of government; government officials were issued based on merit, instead of being born into it. • Once paper was invented, painting and calligraphy flourished, and fine porcelain was created.

  10. Economy • The economy became badly damaged due to the policies of the former dynasty. • Heavy taxes were imposed on the peasant population. • Construction of The Great Wall took a toll on china as well.

The Fall • When population started growing people needed more food, farmers could not provide enough food and many people began to starve. • Individuals started making more money which made the currency less valuable and things got very expensive. • Social order became mixed up because poverty started to spread due to huge families with no income. • The Han empire collapsed by 220 CE.

Han vs US • During the Han dynasty, cities were urbanizing really fast which caused a huge population growth. • They didn’t have enough workers to keep up with society’s demands. • City urbanization of today are urbanizing extremely fast but we have a strong government that can control the economy.
