  1. Morality A look at “proper” or “modest” clothing

  2. 1 Timothy 2:9-10 “Likewise, I want women to adorn themselves with proper clothing, modestly and discreetly, not with braided hair and gold or pearls or costly garments, [10] but rather by means of good works, as is proper for women making a claim to godliness.”

  3. Naked • Unclothed • Scantily clad or poorly clad • Clad in undergarments only

  4. Apparel • A garment let down, dress, attire • (Thayer’s Greek English Lexicon)

  5. Modest: • Orderly, well arranged, decent; • The well ordering is not of dress and demeanor only but of the inner life, uttering indeed and expressing itself in the outward conversation (conduct) • (Vine’s Exp. Dict.)

  6. Shamefacedness: • A sense of shame, that modesty which is rooted in the character - the opposite of brazenness; • a shrinking from all that is indelicate

  7. Sobriety: • Reasonableness, rationality, good judgment, self government with its constant rein on all the passions and desires which would hinder the temptations to these from arising. • (Vine’s Esp. Dict.)

  8. Bible Principles that Regulate Dress

  9. Man – vs - God • Fig leaves used to make Aprons (3:7) • Hebrew: HAGORA -- “girdle, belt, ... loinclothes, ... aprons” • Garment covering loins; from abdomen down, pubic region and hips; anything from midriff or waist and often covering hips

  10. Man • Fig leaves used to make APRONS (3:7) • Completely “naked” or nude before apron (v. 7), • Relatively “naked” with apron (v. 10).

  11. God • Animal skin used to make adequate clothing or Coats / Tunic (3:21) • Hebrew: KUTTONET • “a tunic...; generally with sleeves, coming down to the knees, rarely to the ankles”

  12. Man – vs - God • Went from strictly naked • To partially naked – Man • To properly clothed – God

  13. How Flexible Can We Be? • Consider Culture and Custom • Nakedness covered by God • This principle is not subject to change. • Genesis 3:7, 10-11, 21

  14. Genesis 3:7 “Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves loin coverings.”

  15. Genesis 3:10-11 “He said, "I heard the sound of You in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked; so I hid myself." [11] And He said, "Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten from the tree of which I commanded you not to eat?"”

  16. Genesis 3:21 “The Lord God made garments of skin for Adam and his wife, and clothed them.”

  17. 1 Peter 3:5 “For in this way in former times the holy women also, who hoped in God, used to adorn themselves, being submissive to their own husbands;”

  18. How Flexible Can We Be? • Consider Culture and Custom • Adjust to styles and fashions, but not beyond the limit of God’s Word. • 1 Corinthians 9:19-22

  19. 1 Corinthians 9:19-22 “For though I am free from all men, I have made myself a slave to all, so that I may win more. [20] To the Jews I became as a Jew, so that I might win Jews; to those who are under the Law, as under the Law though not being myself under the Law, so that I might win those who are under the Law;…”

  20. 1 Corinthians 9:19-22 “… [21] to those who are without law, as without law, though not being without the law of God but under the law of Christ, so that I might win those who are without law. [22] To the weak I became weak, that I might win the weak; I have become all things to all men, so that I may by all means save some.”

  21. How Flexible Can We Be? • Consider Culture and Custom • Adjust to styles and fashions, but not beyond the limit of God’s Word. When in Rome do as the Romans do?”

  22. How Flexible Can We Be? • How Short is Too Short? • How long or short for hair? • Styles change but closer to line of male/female distinction, closer to sin. • 1 Corinthians 11:14-15

  23. 1 Corinthians 11:14-15 “Does not even nature itself teach you that if a man has long hair, it is a dishonor to him, [15] but if a woman has long hair, it is a glory to her? For her hair is given to her for a covering.”

  24. How Flexible Can We Be? • How Short is Too Short? • Clear distinction between garments made by man and God. • Apron, girdle, loin-covering • Cover from shoulders at least to knees.

  25. How Flexible Can We Be? • How Short is Too Short? • “How short can I go?”

  26. How Flexible Can We Be? • Seek Safest Course, Set Best Example. • Sober mind of modest dress for all Christians, and must teach children. • 1 Timothy 2:9, 15

  27. 1 Timothy 2:9, 15 “Likewise, I want women to adorn themselves with proper clothing, modestly and discreetly, not with braided hair and gold or pearls or costly garments,”

  28. 1 Timothy 2:9, 15 “But women will be preserved through the bearing of children if they continue in faith and love and sanctity with self-restraint.”

  29. Titus 2:2-7 “Older men are to be temperate, dignified, sensible, sound in faith, in love, in perseverance. [3] Older women likewise are to be reverent in their behavior, not malicious gossips nor enslaved to much wine, teaching what is good, [4] so that they may encourage the young women to love their husbands, to love their children,…”

  30. Titus 2:2-7 “…[5] to be sensible, pure, workers at home, kind, being subject to their own husbands, so that the word of God will not be dishonored. [6] Likewise urge the young men to be sensible; [7] in all things show yourself to be an example of good deeds, with purity in doctrine, dignified,”

  31. Titus 2:12 “instructing us to deny ungodliness and worldly desires and to live sensibly, righteously and godly in the present age,”

  32. Confused By False Gods • Popularity • “Everyone else is doing it” • Exodus 23:2 “You shall not follow the masses in doing evil,”

  33. Matthew 7:13-14 “Enter through the narrow gate; for the gate is wide and the way is broad that leads to destruction, and there are many who enter through it. [14] "For the gate is small and the way is narrow that leads to life, and there are few who find it.”

  34. Joshua 24:15 “If it is disagreeable in your sight to serve the Lord, choose for yourselves today whom you will serve: whether the gods which your fathers served which were beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you are living; but as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord."”

  35. Confused By False Gods • Comfort, Convenience. • Luke 9:23 “And He was saying to them all, "If anyone wishes to come after Me, he must deny himself, and take up his cross daily and follow Me.”

  36. Confused By False Gods • “I Don’t Care What Anyone Says, I Like My Shorts Even if They Expose My Thighs.” • John 12:48 “He who rejects Me and does not receive My sayings, has one who judges him; the word I spoke is what will judge him at the last day.”

  37. Matthew 26:39 “And He went a little beyond them, and fell on His face and prayed, saying, "My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from Me; yet not as I will, but as You will."”

  38. Confused By False Gods • Compromise for Sports. • Compromise Forbidden • Isaiah 52:11 “Depart, depart, go out from there, Touch nothing unclean; Go out of the midst of her, purify yourselves, You who carry the vessels of the Lord.”

  39. Confused By False Gods • Compromise for Sports. • Modesty compromised by some Jews in Inter-Testamental times: “Let us go and make a covenant with the heathen that are round about us: for since we departed from them we have had much sorrow ... They built a place of exercise at Jerusalem according to the customs of the heathen” in 175 B. C. (1 Maccabees 1:11, 14)

  40. Confused By False Gods • Compromise for Sports. • Modesty compromised by some Jews in Inter-Testamental times: • GUMNASION - (GUMNOS, naked) • “the public place where athletic exercises were practiced, the gymnastic school” • Greek athletes exercised and performed nude.

  41. The Effect of Immodesty • Effect on the woman. • It violates the principles of 1 Timothy 2:9-10

  42. 1 Timothy 2:9-10 “Likewise, I want women to adorn themselves with proper clothing, modestly and discreetly, not with braided hair and gold or pearls or costly garments, [10] but rather by means of good works, as is proper for women making a claim to godliness.”

  43. The Effect of Immodesty • Effect on the woman. • It violates the principles of 1 Timothy 2:9-10 • It causes others to stumble. • Romans 14:21
