Types of patients • Voluntary patients: Patients who volunteer to be in the mental health hospital for self harm, eating disorders or other problems. • Involuntary patients: Patients that have to go without a choice. They normally require immediate treatment. • Many patients are normal people just with a strained relationship or have a substance problem. Patients family should show support to help them with their problems.

  6. Costs • Many institutions recommend that patients stay a minimum of 3 months. • On average an stay at a mental health/substance 3-6 months. • Most facilities cost about $7,000 a month. • The average cost of a stay is $21,000-$42,000

  7. Treatments • Counseling- the patient meets with a psychologist and discusses how he/she feels. • Self Help Groups- groups of people with similar problems meet together. They follow a 12-Step program similar to that used in AA groups. • Withdrawal Therapy (Detox)- The patient is slowly weaned off a substance . • Many patients with mental health problems go on medications to help them. • Brain Stimulation treatments- activities such as games and other activities used to stimulate the brain. This is used when medication is not working and/or the patients have depression.
