  2. Born in 1343 in London • English author, poet, philosopher, bureaucrat, courtier and diplomat. • Took part in the Hundred Years War • One of the first authors to write in English • Was married to Philippa de Roet

  3. Did most of his writing between 1369 and 1393 • Comptroller of the Customs for the Port of London • Died at St.Mary's Chapel at Westminster on October 25, 1400 • Buried in Westminster Abbey

  4. The Canterbury Tales • One of the first books ever to be written in English • About the journey of pilgrims • Chaucer planned to write 120 tales, but managed to complete only 24

  5. Chaucer began to write the stories in the 1380s • Two of the stories are written in prose and the others in verse • Characters from different classes: a knight, a cook, a sailor, a farmer etc.
