  2. What is TL21? • A Professional Development Programme run in 4 Ed. Centres in conjunction with NUI Maynooth • CPD opportunity not based on in-service but access to a developmental process over 2 academic years • Facilitated and co-ordinated by Tommy Lannigan • An Action Research based project with University Accreditation options

  3. Why did RCS take part? • Opportunity for an interested group of Teachers to form a working group (with ongoing outside supports in the form of linked workshops) • Opportunity to identify learning goals and placing them in the wider school context • Opportunity to promote new initiatives in RCS • Opportunity to exchange & share feedback and ideas with 3 other schools • An ‘umbrella’ initiative that covers a multitude!

The Multitude……….to name but a few! • School Self-Evaluation • Literacy Initiatives • Numeracy Initiative • School Improvement Plan • The National Strategy to improve Literacy and Numeracy 2011-2020. • School Development Planning • The Inspectorate – Whole-School/ Subject/Dept • New Junior Cycle

How are we using TL21? • We choose a topic that addresses many of the initiatives already mentioned • We have been engaging in a project called • ‘Improving Literacy in Project Maths’ • A robust Action Research Project involving 2 out of 3 First Year Maths Classes • Numeracy targets set in 2012/13 are being addressed • Literacy is being addressed • Whole-school SSE taking place

What does it look like? • Identify issue/ challenge • Collection and analysis of baseline data • Quantitative: Entrance Assessments, CAT3, WRAT4 & NGRT, Christmas Test (specific questions set) • Qualitative: Student and Parent attitudinal survey, Student engagement survey • Workshops***** • Evaluate progress made • Reflect on process

  8. Current Stage: Workshop 3 • Principal & Deputy Principal • Working with 25 project maths keywords as identified by Maths Dept. • 5 workshops with 2 classes over 5 weeks • Progress and feedback given to Maths Teachers each week.

  9. Workshop • Based on ‘Think, Pair, Share’ group work model • Each Student has a different role e.g. Reporter, Recorder etc. • Emphasis on Group work and Active Participation • Different activities each week • Progression and harder tasks each week
