  23. How can we use reflective models in our everyday teaching lives? • Use one in your Teaching Journal when you reflect on lessons • Meet with a colleague for weekly sharing of reflections • For a TA meeting or an INSET session • After an observation to talk through your lesson with a peer

What professional development makes the most difference to teachers? • Is concrete and classroom-based • Brings in expertise from outside the school • Involves teachers in the choice of areas to develop and activities to undertake • Enables teachers to work collaboratively with peers • Provides opportunities for mentoring and coaching • Is sustained over time • Is supported by effective school leadership (Research by Walter & Briggs, 2012)

  25. Concrete and classroom-based • Video yourself • Try using a completely new technique • Investigate your classroom through a form of practitioner research e.g. Action Research (see Burns 2010) • Observe a colleague • Do a ‘blind’ or unobserved observation

  26. Unobserved observation 1. Teacher talks to ‘observer’ about the lesson- issues, questions, worries etc. ‘Observer’ listens and asks questions supportively. They work with teacher’s agenda. 2. Teacher teaches lesson. 3. Teacher and ‘observer’ have post-lesson talk, focusing on what happened. ‘Observer’ allows teacher to reflect on issues that were discussed before the lesson. 4. Teacher reflects on learning points.
