  5. Mountains • The western most part of our state • The Appalachian Mountains run through this region. (The Blue Ridge and Great Smokey Mts are found here) • Makes up 1/5 of our state • Has a high number of Indians • Asheville is the biggest city (Others include Boone, Cullowhee, and Banner Elk) • Things to do-Great Smoky Mtns National Park, Blue Ridge Parkway, Asheville Zoo

The Piedmont • Means “at the foot of the mountain” • Covers nearly ½ of the state • Gently rolling hills with the occasional rock • Has the highest population in the state with the biggest cities (Raleigh, Durham, Chapel Hill, Charlotte, Greensboro, Winston-Salem) • Home to the biggest economy in the state and biggest financial institutions (Research Triangle Park, Renowned Universities, textile factories, furniture factories, etc.

The Coastal Plain • Two sections (Tidewater and the Inner Coastal Plain) • Largest section of NC • Remains largely Rural today Inner Coastal Plan • Much drier than the Tidewater • Best Suited for farming • Includes main beneficial rivers • Cities- Rocky Mount, Wilson, Greenville, Goldsboro, Fayetteville

  10. The Coastal Plain Tidewater • The area near the coast • Includes the barrier islands (Outer Banks) • Includes our two biggest sounds (Albemarle and Pamlico) • Cities- Elizabeth City, Edenton, Havelock, New Bern, Wilmington

Map Activity • Name three cities in all four of the regions that we did not discuss before. • Name the one of the most southern, western, and eastern city in NC • Name the northern sound in our state • Name a city on barrier islands • Name a city located on the Albemarle Sound and one on the Pamlico Sound. • Name a city between Charlotte and Greensboro • Name a city that is located on the South Carolina border, Tennessee border, and Virginia border. • Name 6 different cities located near lakes • Where in NC are most cities located?

  12. Brochure • You are to create a brochure that will GRAB someone’s attention. That is what they are designed to do. • Look at the items that you are researching and include them in your brochure. Provide pictures of the things or places your are talking about. • Look at the internet, articles, newspapers, books, etc. • Students will have to research one of the four regions in NC (Mountains, Piedmont, Coastal-2 parts: Tidewater and Inner Coastal) and create a brochure to attract visitors to visit that area. • What to look for when researching the area: • Cities • Attractions • Climate • History • Economy • Population • Etc.

  13. Brochure • It should be a tri-fold brochure. Which means it should look like this. • DO NOT USE RESOURCES AS: Wikipedia, About.com, and other resources that might not be reliable. • You have the freedom of designing it the way that you want it, but just remember that it has to relevant and draw attention to the reader
