CHAPTER 3 : PLOT • Everyone starting to making plans on how they can benefit from the sale of Kino’s pearl. • To the community,Kino becomes their enemy because he is their key to make their dreams come true.However,Juana and Kino think that everyone is happy for them. • Kino then plans his future.Kino is brave and confident because he know the sale of the pearl will make him reach. • The priest visits Kino and his family and reminds them to give thanks to God and pray for guidance in the future.Juana agrees that they will get married in the church.When the priest leave,Kino realizes that his plans can be stopped and he prepares himself to face the challenge. • The doctor come and frightens Kino by saying that the poison from the sting may not have left the baby and that it may cause blindness or deformities.Kino allows the doctor to examine Coyotito.

The doctor leaves and say that he will return in an hour’s time. • Coyotito is very sick.After an hour,the doctor returns.He says the poison has returned and gives another medicine.Coyotito is well again. • Kino then assures the doctor that he will pay as soon as the pearl is sold. • The doctor realizes through Kino’s reaction that the pearl is buried near the side post of the house. • The doctor and the neighbours leave. • Kino then rehides the pearl under the sleeping mat. • An intruder enters their home when they were sleeping. • Kino attacks the intruder but he escapes.Kino is slightly injured. • Juana fears for their safety and advises Kino to throw the pearl away or destroy it. • Juana think Kino should do this before they are detroyed by other people’s greed in wanting the pearl. • Kino angrily tells Juana to keep quiet. • Kino then decides to sell the pearl the next morning as he wants so much to educate his son.

  5. SETTING • KINO’S HOUSE –THE DOCTOR TREATS COYOTITO.KINO HIDES THE PEARL .AN INTRUDER ENTERS KINO’S HOUSE .HE WAS ATTACKED BY THE INTRUDER AND SLIGHTLY INJURED.JUANA ADVISES KINO TO THROW THE PEARL AWAY.

  6. THEME GREED THEY ARE WILLING TO POISON KINO’S CHILD. RANSACK AND BURN KINO’S HOUSE. KILL KINO AND HIS FAMILY. FAMILY UNITY FAMILY VALUES OF LOVE , SUPPORT AND RESPECT IS HIGHLIGHTED IN THE NOVEL. INJUSTICE THE PEOPLE OF SPANISH DESCENT,LIKE THE DOCTOR AND THE PRIEST ARE ABUSIVE TO THE NATIVES.THE NATIVES ARE THE MEXICAN-INDIAN NATIVES FIND IT DIFFICULT TO IMPROVE THEIR STATUS.THE NOVEL SHOWS HOW THEY STRUGGLE TO COPE WITH POVERTY AND HARDSHIP.
