  1. Reflections on leadership with Dr. William H. Lee a servant leader

  2. Dr. William H. Lee • Dr. Lee is the founder and the publisher of the Sacramento Observer. The Observer, is recognized as the “The Most Honored Black Newspaper in America.” He is the founding president of the West Coast Black Publishers Association and is a board member and longtime officer of the National Newspaper Publishers Association. http://www.sacobserver.com/about_us/bios_dr_lee.shtml

  3. What is leadership? • The ability to move forward with a mission and goal and the desire and spirit to see it come to pass. One also needs spiritual development that helps to sustain them through difficult times.

  4. Development of your leadership • The seeds that my parents planted in me prepared me. I added to these skills by being well prepared, getting a good education and having the motivation to learn and study so that I can be in service to others.

  5. Servant Leader • “The servant-leader is servant first. It begins with the natural feeling that one wants to serve. Then conscience choice aspires one to lead. The best test is: do those served grow as persons; do they, while being served, become healthier, wiser, freer, more autonomous, more likely themselves to become servants?” • Robert K. Greenleaf, The Servant as Leader, 1970

  6. what motivates you as a leader • I am always concerned with those who are to follow, and want to leave things better than I found them.

  7. Challenges of leadership • Your greatest challenge as a leader is convincing others of your dream or mission and to get them to follow. If you can not convince others to follow you are not a leader.

  8. How to motivate your followers • I believe the best way to motivate others is by example. I don’t mind the hard work because it will motivate others to work harder and to be of service to the community.

  9. development of leadership in others • You have to open your heart, resources and nurture and share your insights and wisdom with others who show hope and promise in serving others.

  10. How to create sustainability • In these difficult times we are faced with re-evaluating our goals, mission and vision and finding solutions to the problems that we are facing.

  11. Reflections • Leadership is not just about the betterment of oneself but more importantly about building sustainable relationships with others who have a similar mission or goal to serve others and better the communities in which we live, work and play. • Like Dr. Lee my family provided the foundation upon which my concept of leadership was built and my formal education has assisted in my further development and opportunities to assist others through my professional endeavors and volunteer activities.
