  2. Subject Pronouns I am the teacher. You are a student. He is French. We are students. You are friends. (formal) They are from France. They (women) are from Paris. • Je suis le professeur. • Tu es un élève. • Il est Français. • Elle est Française. • Nous sommes des élèves. • Vous êtes des amis. • Ils sont de France. • Elles sont de Paris.

  3. Note “Je” • When je is followed by a word that begins with a vowel, it becomes simply j'. • Example: • J’arrive. I’m coming

  4. Note “vous” • Vous is the formal 'you' form. Using it shows respect and social distance. It should always be used when addressing strangers except for in certain environments like school where students normally use tu with each other. Permission should be asked before using tu, but you normally shouldn't ask if someone is significantly older than you. It should always be employed when addressing people of authority like your teachers or the police.

  5. Note “vous” (continued) • Examples: • Excusez-moi. Vous parlez francais ?Excuse me. Do you speak French? • Comment allez-vous? How are you doing

  6. Note “vous” (continued) • Vous is also used for plural you. • Examples • Vous êtes fous. You (all) are crazy. • Vous êtes des élèves. You (all) are students.
