  3. Social software applications include communication tools and interactive tools often based on the Internet. • Communication tools typically handle the capturing, storing and presentation of communication, usually written but increasingly including audio and video as well.

  4. Interactive tools handle mediated interactions between a pair or group of users. They focus on establishing and maintaining a connection among users, facilitating the mechanics of conversation and talk.

  5. Blogs in language teaching

  6. A blog (short for weblog) is a frequently updated website that often resembles an online journal. • It's so easy to create and update a blog - it requires only basic access to the Internet, and a minimum of technical know-how.

  10. The Learner Blog is the third type of blog and it requires more time and effort from the teacher to both set up and moderate. It involves giving each student an individual blog. The benefit of this is that this becomes the student's own personal online space. Students can be encouraged to write frequently about what interests them, and can post comments on other students' blogs.

  12. To provide extra reading practice for students. • As online student learner journals that can be read by their peers. • To guide students to online resources appropriate for their level. • To increase the sense of community in a class. • To encourage shy students to participate.

  14. The term wiki is derived from the Hawaiian word for "quick". Best-known wiki project on the Web is Wikipedia ( the open-access encyclopedia). • Wikis are typically powered by wiki software and are often used to create collaborative websites, to power community websites, for personal note taking, in corporate intranets, and in knowledge management systems.

  15. The goal of Wiki sites is to become a shared repository of knowledge. • Using wikis in English language teaching can help students greatly. They can not only read and analyse different articles, they have the opportunity to participate themselves in their creation, edit some information and even put some changes.
