PA Common Core Standards

Introduction and Implications

Delaware Valley school District

Common Core State Standards

If you do what you’ve always done…

you’ll get what you always got.

- Standards: What students should know and be able to do to be ready to succeed in entry-level credit-bearing, academic college courses and in workforce training programs
- Eligible Content: the test blueprint; what is assessed

- PSSA will be an English Language Arts assessment – both reading and writing (Grades 3 -8).
- Keystone Exams will replace PSSA at Grade 11 in both English Language Arts and Mathematics. In addition a Biology Keystone Exam will be administered.
- Revised PSSA increases rigor and difficulty –---

Four Levels of Cognitive Complexity:

Level 1: Recall and Reproduction

Level 2: Skills & Concepts

Level 3: Strategic Thinking

Level 4: Extended Thinking

How will this look in my classroom?

What does it look like in practice?

Common Core History and Practice!

Level 3: Strategic Thinking

Level 4: Extended Thinking

Determine the author’s purpose and describe how it affects the interpretation of a selection.

Summarize information from multiple sources to address a specific topic.

Analyze and describe the characteristics of various types of literature.

Analyze and synthesize information from multiple sources.

Examine and explain alternative perspectives across a variety of sources.

Describe and illustrate how common themes are found across texts from

different cultures.

Level 3: Strategic Thinking

Level 4: Extended Thinking

Support ideas with details and examples.

Use voice appropriate to the purpose and audience.

Edit writing to produce a logical progression of ideas.

Write an analysis of two selections, identifying the common theme and generating a purpose that is appropriate for both.

Math in Practice!

Level 3: Strategic Thinking

Level 4: Extended Thinking

Compose and decompose geometric figures to find

area/perimeter of irregular figures

Analyze or evaluate various representations of data

Solve a multiple-step problem

and provide a

mathematical explanation

Explain, generalize or connect

mathematical ideas to solve

problems and interpret solutions

Relate mathematical concepts

to other content areas & to

real-world applications in

new situations

Apply a mathematical model to

illuminate a problem or situation

Conduct a project that specifies

a problem, identifies solution

paths, solves the problem, and

reports results

Design a mathematical model

to inform and solve a practical

or abstract situation
