  2. Gender Identity & Gender Typing • Gender Identity- Is when a child gets sense of belonging to one sex and not to the other. • Gender typing- Is when a child starts to get the idea of what activities, interest, traits and behavior are appropriate. Feminine or Masculine.

  3. Sex & Gender • Sex- Is the Physical or anatomical attributes of Male and Female. • This is what the child is born with. Either Male private parts or Female private parts. • Gender- The differences that are learned between Male or Female. • Meaning, what a child learns. What actions are Masculine and what actions are Feminine.

  4. Intersex Conditions & Transsexuals • Intersex Conditions- Every year there are thousands of babies that are born with intersex conditions. • Transsexuals- People who feel they are either Male or Female. (Born a certain sex, but feel they are the other.)

  5. Influences on Gender Development • Biological Influences- Boys and girls tend to play with children of the same sex. These play and toy preferences have basis in prenatal hormones. • Cognitive Influence- Before babies are born they recognize that there are two sexes. • Learning Influences- Gender socialization begins at the moment of birth.

  6. Adolescence • The physiology of adolescence- The period of development between puberty. • Early-maturing boys and girls. • Generation me • Peers play an important part in adolescents.

  7. Adulthood • Stages & Ages- • Trust Versus Mistrust • Auntonomy Versus Shame and Doubt • Initiative Versus Guilt • Comletence Versus Interiority • Identity Versus Role Confusion • Intimacy Versus Isolation • Generativity Versus Stagnation • Ego Integrity Versus Despair

  8. Transitions of Life • “Certain events tend to occur at particular times in life…” • Emerging Adulthood • The Middle Years

  9. Old Age “When Does Old Age Start?” • Fluid intelligence • Crystallized intelligence • Conditions that were thought to be caused by old age- • Apparent Senility • Weakness, frailty and diseases • Depression, passivity, and memory problems.
