    3. HCC’s Vision HCC provides high quality education at an affordable price to more than 60,000 students each semester. It also provides training for businesses, growing and emerging industries as well as vital civil service organizations. And, there are few investments that yield a higher return or contribute more to the economy. As we look to the future, we recognize there are critical needs that our community, as well as those surrounding us, face. Education is the answer. So, too, is HCC. One of the goals of community college is to make college accessible and affordable, especially for underserved communities. That’s what this annexation effort is all about. 5. As we continue to state, the very people who need our services most (and are now being charged more) are the ones who comprise the overwhelming majority of homes.   The goal is to get these potential students into our classrooms to open up to them more opportunities. This is what this educational effort is all about and reinforces why it is so critical. 6. Tuition and Fees are the largest deterrent to attending college. The impact on tax development and our economy of the population not moving beyond a high school education is negative. 7. This slide gives an immediate picture of the variance in the cost of 1 year of postsecondary education in Houston today. HCC offers affordable, high quality education. Students in Alief now pay 2x as much as in-District students. Annexation would reduce tuition by 50%, saving $800 per full-time semester or $3,200 for an associates degree. Research shows students who transfer to upper division from community college do as well as native students in upper division. 8. Did You Know? The return on the taxpayer investment is 19%, according to a cost-benefit analysis recently completed by Economic Modeling Specialists, Inc. for HCC. As many of you are aware, Alief ISD is THE most diverse school district in Texas. Our investment in education has returns….a public good and a private benefit. Our failure to invest also has returns in higher health care costs, higher crime, higher cost for social programs. 9. Spring Branch Right now there are 3,500 Alief residents attending classes at HCC. In-district residency would save each of them $1,250 a year for a full 12-hour course load. Since the Alief campus can accommodate another 7,000 students once its top 3 floors are completed, the Alief community would save well over $12 million in tuition each year that these students attended HCC full time.Right now there are 3,500 Alief residents attending classes at HCC.
