  1. Life Processes If something is alive it must carry on several different activities in order to stay alive. These are the life processes.

  2. 1. Nutrition • When an organism takes materials from its environment and changes it into forms it can use • Ingestion- take in food • Egestion- eliminate indigestible food

  3. 2. Transportation • This is how substances are distributed throughout the organism. • Some organisms use only diffusion, others also have circulatory systems.

  4. 3. Respiration • Releasing chemical energy in stored nutrients • Aerobic respiration- sugar is broken down in the presence of oxygen • Anaerobic respiration- sugar is broken down with no oxygen present

  5. 4. Synthesis and Assimilation Can make simple chemicals into complex ones and break complex chemicals and into simpler ones

  6. Growth Organisms increase in size/maintain/repair themselves.

  7. Excretion Removing wastes from the body

  8. Regulation Maintain a stable internal environment

  9. Reproduction • Producing new organisms of their own kind • Asexual reproduction- one parent, offspring identical to the parent • Sexual reproduction- two parents, offspring not identical to the parent (it will have a combination of their DNA)
