  2. Notification Requirements • Any person in charge of a vessel or offshore facility • As soon as they have knowledge of any discharge of oil or hazardous substance • Shall notify the National Response Center

  3. Cont. • If not possible to notify NRC or OSC immediately, reports can be made to the nearest CG unit • Person in charge of the vessel or facility still notifies NRC as soon as possible

  4. How to Report to NRC • Toll-free numbers: 1-800-424-8802 or 1-877-24-WATCH (92824) • Without 800 access: (202) 267-2675 • Online reporting form found on the • NRC Website: www.nrc.uscg.mil • 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year

  5. Reports to NRC • Any oil or chemical discharge MUST be reported by the responsible party immediately • Any witness to the incident or the first person to discover it should report any information they have, especially if the responsible party is not known.

  6. Reports of Terrorism requires telephonic notification to the NRC Examples include: • Bombings • Bomb Treats • Suspicious Letters or Packages • Releases of Chemical/Biological/Radioactive Agents

  7. Information Needed Upon Notification Duty Officer will guide the caller through a series of questions concerning the spill or release: • The caller’s contact information • The name, address, and phone number of the responsible party (if known) • A description of the incident • The location of the incident • The time of the incident • The cause of the incident

  8. Failure to Notify • Any person who fails to notify the appropriate agency immediately of a discharge is • Fined accordingly, or • Imprisoned for not more than 5 years • Or both
