  2. REVIEW Let’s discuss what we did in the last session. • Factor: Number that is multiplied to give a product • Product: Number that is obtained by multiplying numbers. • Multiplication by a whole number isREPEATED ADDITION CONFIDENTIAL

  3. REVIEW There are several properties of multiplication. 1) COMMUTATIVE PROPERTY: We can change the order of the factors and the product stays the same. EXAMPLE: 4 x 3 = 12 3 x 4 = 12 2) IDENTITY PROPERTY: We can multiply a number by 1and the product is the number. EXAMPLE: 3 x 1 = 3 3) ZERO PROPERTY: We can multiply a number by 0 and the product is zero. EXAMPLE: 7 x 0 = 0 CONFIDENTIAL

Let’s learn few terms before we proceed! • Multiple: It is the product of a number and any whole number. 4 and 6 are both multiples of 2. • Even numbers: Whole numbers that are divisible by 2 are even numbers. Like the numbers 2, 4, 6, 8 and 10. These numbers are the multiples of 2. • Odd numbers: Whole numbers that are not divisible by 2 are odd numbers. Like the numbers 1, 3, 5, 7, and 9. These numbers are not the multiples of 2. CONFIDENTIAL

  5. Prime numbers: Numbers whose factors are only 1 and the number itself are prime numbers. Like the numbers 1, 2, 3, 5, 7, 11, 13 and 17 are prime numbers. • Composite numbers: All the non-prime numbers except 0 and 1, are Composite Numbers. CONFIDENTIAL

  6. We can multiply by the means of Skip Counting also. By Skip Counting we mean that we can find the multiples of any number by hopping equal steps on the number line. 2 2 2 0 1 2 3 4 5 6 • Here the numbers are taking 3 jumps each of 2 steps. CONFIDENTIAL

  7. Find: 2 x 5 We use Skip Count by 2 five times to find the result for this purpose. 2 2 2 2 2 0 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 The product is 10. • The numbers 2, 4, 6, 8 and 10 are multiples of 2. These numbers are obtained by multiplying a number times 2. CONFIDENTIAL

  8. We take a problem that is : 3 x 4 Let’s see here: We use Skip Count by 3 four times to find the result for this purpose. 3 3 3 3 11 0 12 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 The product is 12. • Here the numbers are taking 4 jumps each of 3 steps. CONFIDENTIAL

  9. There are other strategies that can be used for multiplication. Find the value of 7 x 3. Use a Known Fact 7 groups of 3 = 7 groups of 2 plus 7 7 x 3 = 7 x 2 + 7 = 14 + 7 = 21 7 x 3 = 21 CONFIDENTIAL

  10. Find the value of 8 x 6. Double a Known Fact 8 groups of 6 = 4 groups of 6 + 4 groups of 6 8 x 6 = (4 x 6 ) + (4 x 6) = 24 + 24 = 48 8 x 6 = 48 CONFIDENTIAL

  15. We will try to understand this with the help of a model Find 4 x 4 : Shade the square on the graph with 4 rows and 4 squares in each row. Then count the number of squares. CONFIDENTIAL

  16. Record the number of squares in a table. Thus, 4 x 4 = 16 Can you find out the value of 3x3 with the help of the model given below? 3 x 3 = 9 CONFIDENTIAL
