  1. Hypocrites and Backsliders:Lesson 013 10 Steps to Temptation: The FirstSin in Genesis 3:1-6

  2. The Mechanics of Temptation • James 1:12-16 • 12 Blessed is the man who remains steadfast under trial, for when he has stood the test he will receive the crown of life, which God has promised to those who love him. 13 Let no one say when he is tempted, “I am being tempted by God,” for God cannot be tempted with evil, and he himself tempts no one. LWBC 01-13-08

  3. The Mechanics of Temptation • 14 But each person is tempted when he is lured and enticed by his own desire. 15 Then desire when it has conceived gives birth to sin, and sin when it is fully grown brings forth death.16 Do not be deceived, my beloved brothers. • Let us look at the mechanics of Temptation found in verse 14, by looking at the original Greek terminology: LWBC 01-13-08

  4. The Mechanics of Temptation • James 1:14But each one is temptedwhen he is carried away by his own lustand enticed. • but each one=hekastos= each individual • is tempted =peirazo(Pres Pass. Ind.) =receives a solicitation to do evil LWBC 01-13-08

  5. The Mechanics of Temptation • when he is carried away =ezelko=taken in tow, pulled • by =hupo= under the authority of • his own =idios= his personal or hisindividual • desire =epithumia= lust pattern • and enticed =deleazo=baited LWBC 01-13-08

  6. The Mechanics of Temptation • If we extract out the most basic elements we see: • Personaldesire + bait = Temptation • However, we must not miss the fact that it is the “Authority” of the Personal Desire that is towing us along toward the bait. • That “Authority of the Desire” is the key to understanding Hypocrites and Backsliders. • Let us look at the verys first Temptation and see how it works: LWBC 01-13-08

  7. 10 Steps to Temptation: The FirstSin in Genesis 3:1-6 • Genesis 3:1-6 (YLT)1 And the serpent hath beensubtileabove everybeast of the field which Jehovah God hathmade, and hesaithunto the woman,is it truethat God hath said, Ye do not eat of every tree ofthe garden? • 2 And the womansaithunto the serpent,of thefruit of the trees of the garden we do eat,3 and of the fruit of the tree which is in the midstof the garden God hath said, Ye do not eat of it,nor touch it, lest ye die. LWBC 01-13-08

  8. 10 Steps to Temptation: The FirstSin in Genesis 3:1-6 • 4 And the serpentsaithunto the woman, dying,ye do not die,5 for God doth know that in the day of youreating of it your eyes have been opened, andye have been as God, knowing good and evil. • 6 And the womanseeththat the tree is good forfood, and that it is pleasant to the eyes, and thetree is desirable to make one wise, and shetakethof its fruit andeateth, andgivethalso toher husband with her, and he doth eat; LWBC 01-13-08

  9. 10 Steps to Temptation: The FirstSin in Genesis 3:1-6 • Wiersbe says this about the first Temptation: • The tempter. • God is not the author of sin, nor does Hetempt people to sin; this is the work of thedevil (James 1:13). We have already seenthat Satan fell into sin prior to the work ofGen. 1:3ff. • He was a beautiful angeloriginally, rejoicing at God's Creation (Job38:4-7), but he sinned and was judged byGod (Isa. 14:12-17; Ezek. 28:11-19). (Wiersbe) LWBC 01-13-08

  10. 10 Steps to Temptation: The FirstSin in Genesis 3:1-6 • The tempter. • Note that Satan came to Eve in the guiseof a serpent, for he is a masquerader andnever appears to people in his truecharacter. • In Gen. 3, Satan is the serpent whodeceives (2Cor. 11:3); in Gen. 4, he is theliar that murders (John 8:44). • We must take care to avoid his deceptiveways. LWBC 01-13-08

  11. 10 Steps to Temptation: The FirstSin in Genesis 3:1-6 • The target. • Satan aimed at Eve’s mind (2Cor. 11:1-3;1 Tim. 2:9-15) and succeeded indeceiving her. • Satan uses lies. • He is a liarhimself and the father of lies (John 8:44). LWBC 01-13-08

  12. 10 Steps to Temptation: The FirstSin in Genesis 3:1-6 • The tactic. • As long as the mind holds to God’struth, Satan cannot win; but once themind doubts God's Word, there isroom for the devil’s lies to move in. • Satan questioned God's Word (v. 1),denied God's Word (v. 4), and thensubstituted his own lies (v. 5). LWBC 01-13-08

  13. 10 Steps to Temptation: The FirstSin in Genesis 3:1-6 • Note that Satan seeks to undermineour faith in the goodness of God-hesuggested to Eve that God washolding out on themby keepingthem from the tree of the knowledgeof good and evil. • When we question God's goodnessand doubt His love, we are playingright into the hands of Satan. LWBC 01-13-08

  14. 10 Steps to Temptation: The FirstSin in Genesis 3:1-6 • Satan made the temptation soundwonderful by making an offer:“Youwill be like God! • Satan himself had wanted to be“Like theMost High”(Isa. 14:14), and centuries laterhe offered Christ“all the kingdoms of theworld”if He would worship him (Matt. 4:8). LWBC 01-13-08

  15. 10 Steps to Temptation: The FirstSin in Genesis 3:1-6 • The tragedy. • Eve should not have“given place to thedevil”(Eph. 4:27); she should have held toGod's Word and resisted him. • We wonderwhere Adam was during this conversation. • At any rate, Eve took away from God'sWord by omitting“freely”(v. 2); she addedto the Word by adding“touch it”(v. 3); andshe changed the Word by making God's“You shall surely die”into“Lest you die”. LWBC 01-13-08

  16. 10 Steps to Temptation: The FirstSin in Genesis 3:1-6 • In v. 6 (nkjv) we see the tragic operation ofthe lust of the flesh (“Good for food”), thelust of the eyes (“Pleasant to the eyes"),and the pride of life (“Desirable to makeone wise") See 1 John 2:15-17. LWBC 01-13-08

  17. 10 Steps to Temptation: The FirstSin in Genesis 3:1-6 • It is difficult to sin alone. • Something in usmakes us want to share the sin withothers [as Eve did with Adam]. • Adam deliberately sinned andplunged the world into judgment (1 Tim.2:14 - “and Adam was not deceived, but the woman was deceived and became a transgressor.”). • Wiersbe, W. W. (1993).Wiersbe'sexpository outlines on the Old Testament(Ge3:1). Wheaton, IL: Victor Books. LWBC 01-13-08

  18. 10 Steps to Temptation: The FirstSin in Genesis 3:1-6 • So, what did we see in the Genesis 3 Temptation that relates back to what we learned in James 1:14? • Let’s start with the easy one: • What was the “Bait”? • What was the “Desire”? • Was there “Her own Authority of Desire” towing Eve? Fruit of the Tree Make me Wise No, so what substituted for her own “Authority of Desire”? Why? Satan LWBC 01-13-08

  19. 10 Steps to Temptation: The FirstSin in Genesis 3:1-6 • Because she was still “Innocent”. • She had no “Authority” of Desire, yet. • She did not receive that “Authority” until she committed the first sin. • The first sin then “corrupted” her body, as we saw in the judgments last week all related to “Dust”, from which Adam was made and Eve derived. • The Fruit they ate caused a change in their cellular structure, which, not only gave them a new “Authority” inside them, it, we learned, would be passed down from generation to generation -- it’s Genetic. LWBC 01-13-08

  20. 10 Steps to Temptation: The FirstSin in Genesis 3:1-6 • Since Eve had no “Authority of Desire”, we can study the passage to see the pattern of the First Temptation. • Part of it is internal in Eve, in her “innocence”, and part of it was external, from the serpent and the Tree. • But all of it came together to form a common, almost universal, pattern of temptation for all human beings, since. • We will look at the “10 Steps” and then look at them in the First Temptation: LWBC 01-13-08
