  2. Objectives: The aim of this study was to examine the pattern of dermatological manifestations of Diabetes Mellitus (DM) in Sohag University Hospital, Egypt. Patients and Methods: This cross- sectional study had included patients with DM of different age groups and from both sexes (n=700) who attended Dermatology and DM out patients clinics in Sohag University Hospital between January 2009 and January 2010. Complete dermatological examination was performed for skin, mucous membranes, hair and nails. Results: Out of the 700 diabetic patients included in this study, 402 (58%) were females and (72%) came from rural areas. The mean ± SD of age of the study populations was 54.1 ± 28.1 years. Out of the 700 patients, 469 (67%) had type II DM and (33%) had type I. Out of our patients 390 (56%) had uncontrolled DM and (44%) had controlled DM. Cutaneous manifestations were detected in 461 (65.9%) of patients with DM (Table 1) .

  3. Out of the 461 affected patients, 298 (64.6%) had infectious skin diseases and 163 (35.4%) had non-infectious skin diseases. Fungal infections were found in 56% of patients with DM with cutaneous manifestations. Tineapedis was the commonest (18%). Bacterial infections were less frequent than fungal Infections and were found in 33% of patients. Generalized pruritus was the most common manifestations that was found in 43.5% of patients with DM with non-infectious skin diseases. Other less frequent skin diseases (N=30); Diabetic foot (N=4) , alopecia (N=4), Eczema (N=3), pityriasisrosea (N=3), Bullous pemphigoid (N=2), Pemphigus vulgaris (N=2), Eruptive xanthoma (N=2), Granuloma annulare (N=1), Necrobiosislipoidicadiabeticorum (N=1), Diabetic bullae (N=1), Pyogenic granuloma (N=1), Xanthelasma (N=1), Partial lipodystrophy (N=1), Systemic lupus erythematosus (N=1), Discoid lupus erythematosus (N=1), Localized morphea (N=1), Pyodermagangrenosum,(N=1), (Table2-3). Conclusions: This study highlights the patterns of cutaneous manifestations of diabetes in Sohag province.
