  1. Mid-Term Review 2 October 2012 MSIRI Réduit Mauritius

  2. ACP Project 3.3 Technology development for disposal of vinasse by incineration

  3. Implementing Institution MSIRI EUR0 379, 330 Budget More info on: http://www.acp-srp.eu/en

  4. To benefit All ACP Countries Caribbean Pacific Africa

  5. The Project Enhance the competitiveness of ACP sugar factories Through sustainable disposal of vinasse from ethanol plants

  6. The initial project • Initiated in 2005 • Vinasse incineration can provide a satisfactory solution to the pollution problem • …... still holds • Relevant with Policy of Zero Liquid Discharge • India (ISSCT, 2009) • Maurice île Durable? ISSCT (2009) - Zero liquid discharge through spent wash incineration (R Rajesh, Thermax. Boilers, India). The policy of zero liquid discharge being implemented in India at present requires that ethanol plants adopt new technologies for effluent discharge.

  7. The initial project • By 2011 when the project was ready to start Technology has evolved .. . . .

  8. The initial Research Targets Design • Laboratory Scale Incinerator Industrial Boilers exist • Vinasse Product Drier Vinasse evaporators exist….. Alcodis • A test Heat Recovery Equipment • Industrial CMS boilers exist ….. India, china Construct

  9. The initialResearch Targets No more relevant Turn Key plants in India, China…. Source: www.thermaxindia.com/Fileuploader/Files/Spentwash.pdf

  10. SAG recommendation April 2011 In the light of technological evolution ….. A comprehensive “Desktop Study” to be carried out to re-assess the R&D strategy on vinasse treatment

  11. Desktop Study Report updated in March 2012 and presented in Brussels Scientific journals & web articles scanned - Discussions

  12. Desktop Study Conclusions • Multiple vinasse treatment technologies exist all around the world but need further optimization • Vinasse is best treated by a combination of technologies • It will differ in different ACP countries

  13. Conceptual Framework generated from the Desktop study Technical & economic advantages & disadvantages A little …. Build Capacity To be in a position to recommend the best combination of technologies under different situation in ACP countries

  14. Proposed Activities Summary Activities Period On-site assessment of existing and promising technologies Jan – Aug 2013 R & D activities at MSIRI • Demineralization & conditioning of vinasse • Extracting value-added products from vinasse • Innovative composting route for CMS • Fuel route for CMS Feb – Nov 2013 Reporting Early 2014

  15. Activities & Justification

  16. Vinasse Bio-composting Investigate what ? Methanation Anaerobic: COD/BOD <90% Eff. Effluents Partial Effluents Aerobic Value-added products D Demineralization CMS F - Irrigation P Support Fuel These technologies work To treat maximum possible amount of vinasse But not 100% pollution free …. Seasonal This project is meant to support these existing vinasse treatment solutions to drastically reduce pollution threats Gas Special Boiler Steam At very large scale, e.g. India Incineration is an option Electricity Carbon Credit ? TA

  17. Demineralization Value-added products & depotassifiedvinasse Bonnet et al., (2002)

  18. Demineralization To extract value added products Vinasse Bio-composting Methanation Anaerobic: COD/BOD <90% Eff. Effluents Produce CMS that can be burnt in any normal boiler X-S CMS can follow this route Effluents Aerobic 1 D Value-added products Demineralization CMS F - Irrigation P Support Fuel Gas Trash 3 • Identify support fuel, e.g. • Trash + Demineralized CMS to produce a fuel as consistent as bagasse • Or as a compost Normal Boiler Special Boiler 2 Fuel Steam Electricity Carbon Credit ? TA

  19. Vinasse Bio-composting Methanation Aerobic Assess technologies that atomize low calorific fuel in boilers for efficient combustion D Value-added products Demineralization CMS F - Irrigation P Support Fuel 4 Gas Saacke Atomizer Trash Special Boiler Normal Boiler Fuel Steam Electricity Carbon Credit ? TA

  20. Atomizer for Vinasse – Status Experimental Two case studies were presented for factories incinerating vinasse-like material (soy molasses) at Araucaria and Cambé, both in the Parana state of Brazil.

  21. Vinasse Bio-composting Methanation 5 VSEP Aerobic Assess the VSEP membrane filtration technology for vinasse/effluents D Value-added products Demineralization CMS F - Irrigation P Support Fuel Gas Trash Normal Boiler Special Boiler Fuel Steam Electricity Carbon Credit ? TA

  22. Vinasse Concentrate VSEP – Status Experimental Vibrating Membrane Technology - Pilot scale testing completed in Brazil in 2010

  23. Vinasse Bio-composting Methanation 5 VSEP Aerobic D Value-added products Demineralization CMS F - Irrigation P 6 Support Fuel Gas Spray Dry To investigate the impact of VSEP filtration on steam demand in evaporator station Trash Normal Boiler Special Boiler Fuel or Compost To investigate whether products from VSEP filtration or CMS can be spray dried ….. Storable solid fertilizer Ash Steam Electricity Carbon Credit ? Fertilizer TA

  24. “Roxol” Spray Dryer – Status Experimental ?

  25. Activities VSEP MSIRI labs On-site or MSIRI labs Characterization Demineralization Conditioning CMS MSIRI labs Spray Dry On-site Trash Fuel Compost Vinasse Boiler Atomizer On-site On-site

  26. Vinasse Bio-composting This ACP project is meant to support typical vinasse treatment system Methanation Aerobic D CMS Fert - Irrigation P

  27. Local Partners contemplated • OMNICANE & FUEL (Alteo) • Existing distilleries – Médine, Beau Plan • Fertilizer companies • Other research organizations

  28. Concluding Remarks • This project is meant to benefit all ACP countries • The MSIRI will be in a position to advise all ACP countries • On the best combination of technologies to minimize pollution in the most economic way - Different countries, different solutions
