What goes in a unit
What goes in a unit?

  • Stage 1: Identifying Desired Results- What standards do we need to address? What do we want students to know, understand, and be able to do as a result of their learning?

  • Stage 2: Assessment Evidence- Describe your performance task(s). Make sure that it addresses the overarching understandings from the standards.

  • Stage 3: Learning Plan- What daily lessons will help your students achieve the learning targets?

  • Use ACS Scope and Sequence to determine ELA focus standards and develop unit framework based on these standards

  • Unpack the standards.

    • Determine key understandings, knowledge, and skills students need in order to master the standards.

    • Use the understandings to write overarching essential questions.

  • Go back to the standards and re-evaluate which standards should be included.

  • Select cross-curricular tie-ins that enhance the ELA standards without overshadowing them

  • Create a performance task that assesses the focus standards

  • Create a learning plan by:

    • Pacing out a lesson progression

    • Selecting complex grade level texts

    • Writing daily lessons that address the needs and interests of your class

    • Including topical essential questions and formative assessments

  • Evaluate the unit using the rubric and make adjustments as needed.
