  1. Hydrogen Storage

  2. Hydrogen economy • The distribution of energy using hydrogen • Hydrogen is not an energy source merely a means of transporting and storing energy. • Possible use in vehicles and in storage of energy for intermittent power sources.

  3. Current Methods • Compression- energy for compression and mass of tank • Liquid Hydrogen- requires cryogenic freezing to below 20K • Slush Hydrogen- NASA, triple point maintenance

  4. Hydrogen vs. Hydrocarbon • Currently hydrocarbons are stored at point of use in a stable high energy density state. • Hydrogen has relatively high energy density for mass but not for volume. • Gasoline is liquid at room temp, Hydrogen is liquid at 20K • Fueling infrastructure currently in place

  5. Problems with storage • Hydrogen has a very low viscosity and molecular weight making it prone to leaking • Hydrogen embrittlement can cause high-strength steel, nickel, and titanium to become brittle and crack after exposure to hydrogen, Copper, aluminum, and certain steel alloys are immune

  6. Safety In the event of an accident will you be safe?

  7. Tanks • http://world.honda.com/FuelCell/FCX/tank/ 42gallons, 270miles , 3 min refuel, over 5000psi
