Writing Basics • Use 3rd person versus 1st person • “The author believes…” versus • “I believe…” • Use an active voice versus a passive voice (emphasize the person versus the act) • “The researcher studied behavior.” versus • “The behavior was studied by the researcher” • Pronouns agree in number with the noun • For “the student” use “his or her” versus • “their”

Title Page Running head: AN EXAMPLE 1 An Example of a Title Page for a Paper Selma Powell University Of Central Florida In the Header of page…Type the word “Running head:” Followed by an abbreviated version of the title in ALL CAPS In the Header, Right justify page numbers Center and double space title First and Last name of all authors (No titles) affiliation

  6. ABSTRACT AN EXAMPLE 2 Abstract Write a brief summary of the paper. The summary should be concise and specific.. There should be one paragraph that is single spaced without indentions. An Abstract is approximately 150-250 words Running head is on every page (only 1st page has the word “Running head”) The word Abstract is centered and capitalized

MAIN BODY AN EXAMPLE 3 An Example of a Title Page for a Paper The title of the paper is centered, not in BOLD TIPS The body of the paper is double spaced Headings are centered, boldface, upper and lowercase Identify sources of information correctly Write an introduction paragraph that serves as an advanced organizer Use transition words and sentences to link ideas Write a conclusion paragraph to restate components of the paper.

Quick guide to: In text CitationDirect Quote • Use direct quote when rewording or summarizing resource would alter the meaning of the info. • “direct quote” (Author, year, p.#). • IF the direct quote is 40 words or more: omit the quotation marks, start a new line, indent ½ and inch from left margin, double space. (Author, year, p.#) • If the citation is more than one page, use pp. versus p.

Quick guide to: In text Citation • One work by one author: • Powell (2010) reviewed APA rules • APA rules reviewed in the power point (Powell, 2010). • One work by multiple authors • Powell, Straub, and Rodriguez (2010) at UCF • There are fifteen doctoral students at UCF (Smith & Smith, 1993). • Two or more works w/in the same parentheses • Put them in alphabetical order • One Author with multiple work, list author name only once and by year of publication (Powell, 1998, 1999, 2001)

Title of Periodical, vol(#), pp-pp. doi: xx.xxxxxxxxxx Authors are separated by a comma. Use ampersand. Capitalize first word, word after a colon, and proper nouns. Italicize and Capitalize throughout the title of periodical Italicize volume, not the parentheses or number Use the doi if one is assigned. If retrieved online use: retrieved from http://www.xxxxx
