  1. “2. RAW NUMBERS. The Center has released total state and regional marriage and divorce numbers (not the same thing as rates) for the years 2000, 1999 and 1998. “The total numbers of U.S. divorces (excluding the non-counting states) reported finalized annually are 957,200 in 2000, 944,317 in 1999, and 947,384 in 1998. “The total numbers of U.S. marriages (including those states) reported celebrated annually are 2,355,005 in 2000, 2,366,623 in 1999, and 2,267,854 in 1998.

  2. “3. PROJECTION/PREDICTION. This is the Census Bureau's often-cited "50%" rate, the proportion of marriages taking place right now that will eventually divorce, which has since been revised downward to roughly 43% by the National Center for Health Statistics but was moved back up to around 50% by the Census Bureau in 2002, with even more ifs ands and buts than usual. Most recently, according to the New York Times, it has been revised downward to just over 40%.” (Part of the Divorce Reform Page, sponsored by Americans for Divorce Reform divorcereform@ usa. net, http://www.divorcereform.org/rates.html# anchor1135037)

  8. Married people are much happier and likely to be less unhappy than any other group of people (Waite, 2000). Dr. Linda Waite also found that the incidence of mental illness is lower in married people as compared with unmarried or divorced people. • Married people live up to eight years longer than divorced or never-married people. • Married people suffer from long-term illnesses much less than those who are unmarried (Murphy et al., 1997). • Married men are more financially successful. They earn 10-40% more than unmarried men (Waite & Gallagher, 2000).

  9. Married people save more. Couples in their 50's and 60's had net worth per person almost double that of divorcees, widows or other unmarried people (Smith, 1995). • Married people are less likely to engage in unhealthy behaviors such as drug and alcohol abuse. • People who are married have twice the amount of [intimate relations, sw] as single people and report greater levels of satisfaction in [this] area… ( Mar-riage Does Have Its Benefits! byTodd E. 11. “The marriage…ended after 10 months when I caught her cheating on me. In fact this conversation came up because a mutual American friend of mine and my soon to be ex-wife revealed to me that she was surprised one day when my wife privately told her that ‘Cheating is normal in my country, it's not a big deal.’ “So, while I'm no cultural scholar, I think I have some things to say both about French culture and about infidelity. An author by the

  12. name of Christiann Anderson had this to say about infidelity in French culture: • “Cheating is as French as Brie, and the French consider themselves sophisticated when it comes to dealing with physical configurations. Moreover, the French do not view infidelity the same way we do in the United States. Of course, many French do not support the 'infidelity' philosophy, but, in France, the concept of cheating on one's spouse does not necessarily mean that you must give up your family life. In other words, having a lover, and having a spouse is not a trade off.” • (The Uncivil Litigator,Ruminations of a trial lawyer. 2/12/05, “The French and Infidelity,” http://uncivillitigator. blogspot.com/2005/02/french-and-infidelity.html)
