  1. All There is to know about High School Registration Butler High School

The Registration Card • Each student must sign up for enough classes to fill 8 class periods • 8 is the magic number!! • Fill out the card in PENCIL ONLY!!!! • Every student must sign up for English, Math, Social Studies, and Science. • Every student must sign up for Health/PE and other electives • You must choose 4 alternates (2 A/B and 2 block).

  3. English • Look at your 7th Grade Reading EOG Score attached to your registration card (green paper) • Two Choices: English 1 and English 1 Honors • Most students will take English 1 • English 1 Honors: • Recommended for high level 3 (>365) or 4 on Reading EOG • need to be highly responsible, self-motivated, have good study skills, and enjoy reading • ESL students come see us later and we will help you choose

  4. Math • Look at your Math EOG Score attached to your registration card • If you scored lower than 365 on your Math EOG, put an XX beside Foundations of CC/Math I • If you scored 365 or higher on your Math EOG, put an X beside Math I • If you are currently in Algebra I, put an X beside GeometryUNLESS… • If you are currently in Algebra I and are making an A, put an X beside Geometry Honors • ESL students come see us later and we will help you choose

  5. Social Studies • Every student will take World History • If you currently have an A in Social Studies, you can choose to put an X beside World History Honors instead

  6. Science • Most students will put an X by Earth/Environmental Science • UNLESS, you currently have an A in Science- you can choose to put an X beside Earth/Environmental Science Honors instead • If you are currently in Algebra 1 or Geometry and making an A, put an X beside Biology I Honors • Must put X beside both Geometry Honors and Biology I Honors

AP Opportunities • 9th graders can take specific Advanced Placement (AP) courses • College Level Courses • Very, very, very rigorous • Most students wait to start AP their junior year of high school • At least 2 hours of homework/reading each night!!! • Available Courses: • AP Psychology • AP Human Geography • AP World History • AP Art History • To be considered for AP courses: • Come see Mrs. Brown to get an AP Student Profile Form • Will have conference with BHS counselor and dept. chair • Will have to complete a writing prompt on site at meeting • Only a select few will go into AP courses in 9th grade Must write which course on registration card

  8. Electives • Every student will put an X beside Healthful Living/Principles of PE • Now, count your number of Xs on the front of your card. Subtract that number from 8. This is the number of electives you have left to choose. • Ex 1: If you have a total of 6 Xs you have two elective classes to choose • You can choose 2 Block electives OR 2 A/B classes • Ex 2: If you have a total of 5 Xs you have three elective classes to choose • You can choose 3 Block electives • OR • You can choose 1 Block elective and 2 A/B electives • Every student must complete 2 courses throughout high school in either CTE, arts, or languages (can have a combination of areas)

World Languages • At least 2 years of the same language required for college admission • Butler Offers: • Spanish • French • German • Latin • If you are currently in Spanish I, you should sign up for Spanish II. • Everyone else interested in a foreign language should choose level I of that language. • If you are a native speaker of a language- sign up for level 3 of that language (write on card) or choose level 1 of a new language • Block schedule

  10. Career Technical Ed. Courses • Any courses in the boxes beside World Languages box • PLTW courses are rigorous and will grant an extra quality point in GPA • PLTW Intro to Engineering Design Course will grant 2 extra quality points • Highly recommended that you have taken Algebra I • All scheduled on block schedule

Performing And Visual Arts • If you are currently taking Band/Orchestra OR Advanced Art/Drama/Chorus and wish to continue, put an X beside the Intermediate level of that class • Everyone else should choose beginner level of performing or visual arts classes • To register for Marching Band, put an X beside Concert Band-Intermediate and write Marching Band on the bottom of your card. Also, write which instrument you play. • Photography I requires a $60 yearly fee and you must own a camera • Remember, A/B day classes must be chosen in pairs!

  12. Electives Continued • JROTC I does require you to wear a uniform; JROTC Lab I does NOT require you to wear a uniform often • Other Electives: • All Health/PE electives (A/B day) • General Electives box (block)

  13. alternates • Elective choices are NOT guaranteed • You must choose two BLOCK (4X4) electives and two A/B electives as your alternates. • Write your alternates in the box. • There is a good chance you could end up with one of your alternates so only choose classes you are interested in taking.

  14. Now count!! • Count your class periods (Xs) • Remember! • Foundations of CC/Math I counts as 2 periods • You should have at LEAST 5 Xs on the front side of your card. The MAX you should have on the front is 6 Xs. • You should have 8 Xs total!!! • You should also have 4 alternates written in the “Alternates” box.

  15. Returning your card • Your card is due to your homeroom teacher by • Friday, February 22 • Make sure you review your card with your parent/guardian. • You and a parent/guardian must sign the bottom of the card before you turn it in. • If you do not turn in a completed card, Mrs. Brown or another counselor will choose your classes for you.
