  1. MARINE BIOLOGY FINAL PROJECT HANDBOOK FOR SUCCESSFULLY COMPLETING YOUR FINAL IN THIS COURSE

  2. STEP ONE: CHOOSE A CATEGORY • CATEGORIES INCLUDE • A. Research Project • B. Under the Ice (spring), Phantom of the Aqua (fall) Booth • C. 4th grade lesson to teach

  3. Option 1: Research Project • The Research project should be hands-on and original whenever possible. • Pick a topic early in the semester and do background research (pre-search) • Devise a hypothesis • Set up project, record observations and data • Organize results in graphs or tables • Come up with a conclusion • Keep track of references used!

  4. Examples of Research Projects • Study fish behavior in one of the Marine Aquaria • Add a new animal to the tank and study what happens • Study tank chemistry over time and record long-term measurements in various tanks • Design a display on the tanks or on a marine animal of your choice (the display can go in the hallway or in the aquarium room) • Come up with your own idea!

  5. Research project- Adding new organisms to the tanks.

  6. Option 2: A booth at Under the Ice or Phantom of the Aqua • Under the Ice in the spring semester and Phantom of the Aqua in the fall are programs for all children in the district (we usually get around 350 children attending). • They will come from 5:30-8pm and tour various booths. • The booths should be hands-on in nature. • The booths should be designed to teach concepts related to a topic in Marine biology. • You should have handouts, booklets, etc. the kids at your booth. • You should also have rewards at your booth for when the kids do your activity correctly!

  7. Examples of booths at Under the Ice • The booths should center around either the Arctic or the Antarctic. We are trying to teach them the differences between these two ecosystems. • You could have a booth teaching kids the relative sizes of whales that live in these ecosystems. • You could have an activity about Penguins or Polar bears and how they survive the cold (adaptations). • You could play games, have obstacle courses, etc. that center around animals in these ecosystems. • Be creative and have fun with your booth!

  8. Examples of Phantom of the Aqua Booths

  9. Option 3 – 4th grade teaching day • If you pick this option, you will design a 30 minute hands-0n lesson on any topic in “Fins to Flukes” or “Tentacles to Claws” to teach to 4th graders.

  10. Presentation of Final Project • Everyone will be required to present their project. • The project will be put into a powerpoint format and presented in front of the class at the end of the semester. • For each Option, there is a different format. Follow the format for your project.
