  3. This unit covers…. • Ch. 4- Folk and Popular Culture (material) • Music, sports, food, housing • Ch. 5- Language • Ch. 6- Religion • Ch. 7- Ethnicity • 6 weeks total, ending before Winter Break.

  4. Habit vs. Custom Habit Custom • Individual • Daily basis • Ex. Stopping at DD for coffee each morning. • Ex. Wearing a Bears jersey on Sunday • Group • Routine/ Repetitive act • Characteristic of the group • Ex. The drinking of coffee to start the day • Ex. Tailgating before each Bears home game.

Folk vs. Popular Culture Folk Culture Popular Culture • Practiced by small groups • Isolated/ regional • Small scale • Gives groups of people unique identities. • Practiced by large parts of society • Large scale/ widespread • Through globalization, spreads quickly. • May threaten folk culture

Cultural Taboo • A restriction on a certain behavior within a culture • Use of electricity in Amish culture • Pre-marital sex in most religions. • Eating of beef in Hindu cultures. • Women showing skin in strict Arab cultures. • Committing a taboo may result in punishment, embarrassment, shunning, or shame.
