  4. Habit vs. Custom Habit Custom • Individual • Daily basis • Ex. Stopping at DD for coffee each morning. • Ex. Wearing a Bears jersey on Sunday • Group • Routine/ Repetitive act • Characteristic of the group • Ex. The drinking of coffee to start the day • Ex. Tailgating before each Bears home game.

Cultural Taboo • A restriction on a certain behavior within a culture • Use of electricity in Amish culture • Pre-marital sex in most religions. • Eating of beef in Hindu cultures. • Women showing skin in strict Arab cultures. • Committing a taboo may result in punishment, embarrassment, shunning, or shame.
