She was smiling her mournful smile as she slipped me a crust of bread …” ( Night 53). • Explanation: The French girl risked her life for him and she is helping him after getting beaten by Idek, She was kind enough to clean him up and feed him. She spoke perfect German and this shows kindness and loving

Cruelty • Quote:“ He threw himself on me like a wild beast, beating me in the chest, on my head, throwing me to the ground and picking me up again, crushing me with ever more violent blows, until I was covered in blood”(Night 53). • Explanation: Idek is an angry person and always likes to beat up and punch people. He beat up Elie because he was venting his fury and Elie was crossing his way. After he beat up Elie, he sent him back to work as of he didn’t just brutally beat him almost to death. This shows cruelty because he beat him for being angry.

  4. Loss of Identity • Quote: “I became A-7713. From then on, I had no other name” (Wiesel 42). • Explanation: Elie lost his name because the Germans want to make Jewish not to be like a human or to lose who they are. This show how they lost their identity.

Clench your teeth and wait…” (Wiesel 53). • Explanation: Elie crossed Idek’s path and was beaten until he was covered in blood. Idek is a guy who is always unreasonably abusive. The French girl gave Elie the strength to keep living.

  7. Changes in Elie’s Character • Quote: “for the first time, I felt anger rising within me. What was there to thank him for.” • Explanation: he was angry because he had seen babies and old people getting thrown into the fire like they were nothing. He couldn’t believe that such thing was happening and nothing or even his religion would stop the inhuman things that were happening.
