  4. TheChange of The Seven Commandments

  5. Example: 1. Whatever goes upon two legs is an enemy. 2. Whatever goes upon four legs, or has wings, is a friend. “Four legs good, two legs bad.” • Causing event: Many animals on the farm were not able to learn further than the letter A. To simplify their job, the basic principle of Animalism was reduced. “Four legs good, two legs better.” • Causing event: At the end of the book, pigs were not distinguishable from people. Squealer was walking on his hind legs.

  6. 3. No animal shall wear clothes. This principle is ignored totally at the end of the book. • Causing event: Napoleon himself was wearing a coat.

  7. 4. No animal shall sleep in a bed. “No animal shall sleep in a bed with sheets.” • Causing event: Pigs move into the farmhouse. As they are “brains of the farm”, they should have a quiet place in which they can work. Therefore, the rule is changed, and it is now against sheets, which are a “human invention”.

  8. 5. No animal shall drink alcohol. “No animal shall drink alcohol to excess.” • Causing event: One day, Napoleon drinks too much, and he thinks that he is about to die. However, two days later, he feels much better and wants the small paddock to be planted with barley.

  9. 6. No animal shall kill any other animal. “No animal shall kill any other animal without cause.” Causing events: • *A good reason for killing the traitors who had leagued themselves with Snowball. • *One morning, Squealer announced that the hens must surrender their eggs to be sold. The hens protested against the idea because they think that this is murder. Due to this protest, they were not given any food and nine hens died.

  10. 7. All animals are equal. “All animals are equal but some animals are more equal than others.” • Causing event: At the end of the book, we see that The Seven Commandments are replaced by this principle. This signals the power which is taken over by pigs while all the other animals are still poor.
