  14. Hidden Services

  15. Tor and the NSA • Has Tor been compromised? • Not that we can tell. • “We will never be able to de-anonymize all Tor users all the time but with manual analysis we can de-anonymizea very small fraction of Tor users” • Instead, we’ll just make Tor hard to use. • “GOAL: Degrade Tor experience”

  16. The Dark Side of Tor • The Silk Road • Was run by Ross William Ulbricht. • Generated 9.5 million BTC in sales($2.1 BILLION) • Silk Road itself received ~$90 million in commission.

  17. The Dark Side of Tor • Silk Road’s transactions • Drugs, Hitmen, Weapons, Paraphernalia, Child Pornography, Money laundering, …

  18. The Dark Side of Tor • Silk Road Takedown • Tor was not compromised. • Ross William Ulbricht made a mistake! • Asked a Tor-specific question on Stack Exchange while logged into the wrong account.

  19. The Dark Side of Tor • Ulbricht is charged with drug trafficking, and multiple other charges related to running the Silk Road. • He is also charged with hiring a hitman. • The FBI seized $28.5 million in Bitcoins from Ulbricht. • He claims he’s innocent.

  20. The other Dark Side of Tor • “The Black Market: Reloaded” • Another Silk Road type website. • Is Tor at fault for making these sites possible? • Are the pros of Tor enough to outweigh the cons?
