  2. ELA January 8, 2014 • ELA Materials: source book, paper, pen • Agenda Note: Prepare for Georgia State Writing Assessment. • Homework: Read 30 minutes a night Warm-up: Write 5-8 sentences on the following topic. How was your winter holidays?

Standards & Essential Questions • ELACC8W10: Write routinely over extended time frames (time for research, reflection, and revision) and shorter time Frames (a single sitting or a day or two) for a range of discipline-specific tasks, purposes, and audiences. • What are your expectations of the 8th Grade Writing Assessment? • How can I explain the difference between expository and persuasive writing?

  7. Literacy January 9, 2014 • Get all books ready for the day.  • Use inside voices until announcements are made. • Lesson Focus: You will learn how to do a close reading of a text and that this is a valuable skill for improving comprehension.

ELA January 9, 2014 • ELA Materials: source book, paper, pen • Agenda Note: Prepare for Georgia State Writing Assessment. • Homework: Read independent reading book Warm-up: Write 5-8 sentences on the following topic. Immoral: going against what people consider to be good behavior (adj) As young children, we are taught the difference between right and wrong. Write what you consider to be your own “moral code.” What do you think is an appropriate punishment for immoral behavior.

CCSS.ELA-Literacy.W.8.2d Use precise language and domain-specific vocabulary to inform about or explain the topic. CCSS.ELA-Literacy.W.8.2 Write informative/explanatory texts to examine a topic and convey ideas, concepts, and information through the selection, organization, and analysis of relevant content.

  11. Work Session Analyze Expository and Persuasive Writing Prompts How can I determine whether a writing prompt is expository or persuasive? What key words can I look for in the prompt? Work with a table partner and analyze prompts 3-6. Then choose one of the four prompts to brainstorm.

Profound: deeply felt (adj) Choose one of the following profound emotions and write an acrostic poem that expresses it: disappointment, sadness, joy, or jealousy. Example: Just enough to Overwhelm me to Yield to God’s will and not my own.

  17. Opening • Find your closing assignment from yesterday and make sure that you have written a 3 to 5 sentence summary on the information you learned yesterday during the work session. Be ready to share with the class. 

  18. Work Session Analyze Expository and Persuasive Writing Prompts How can I determine whether a writing prompt is expository or persuasive? What key words can I look for in the prompt? CONTINUE to work with a table partner and analyze prompts 3-6. Then choose one of the four prompts to brainstorm. * We will stop every 3-5 minutes and share out the key words from each prompt. At the end, we will review brainstorming to help you complete this activity. 
