  1. Incidence of Retinal Detachment in Patients with High Myopia After Phakic Iris-Fixated IOL Implantation L.Rosales, L. Izquierdo Jr., M. Henriquez Instituto de Ojos Oftalmo Salud Lima, Peru There is no financial interest in this poster

  2. Purpose: • To describe the incidence of retinal detachment (RD) in patients with high myopia after Artisan/Artiflex phakic intraocular lens (pIOL) implantation.

  3. Materials and Methods • Retrospective study between January 2007 to 2008 • 135 eyes of patients with myopic refraction that underwent pIOL implantation by the same surgeon. • Minimum postoperative follow-up of 1 year • Setting: Oftalmosalud Instituto de Ojos, Lima, Peru.

  4. Materials and Methods Inclusion criteria: • Patients over 18 years old. • Spherical equivalent (SE) over -7.00 Diopter (D). • Stable refraction for at least 2 years. • Best visual acuity (BVA) better than 20/100. • Absence of any abnormalities in the anterior segment. • Minimum endothelial cell count of 2,000 cells/mm3.

  5. Results • The average preoperative SE was -18.3D ( range -8.00 to -23.00). • 96.29% (65 patients) had pIOL implantation in both eyes. • 86 eyes (63.7%) and 49 eyes (36.3%) had Artisan and Artiflex implanted respectively. • The incidence of RD after pIOL implantation was 2.2% (3/135 eyes). • We used the D.O.R.C. vitrectomy machine for all patients with RD.

  6. Results

  7. Conclusions • The pIOL Artisan/Artiflex is a safe and effective option of correction high myopia. • The incidence of RD after pIOL implantation was not different from the natural history of RD in myopic patients.
