  2. The 1950s Boomed • The 1950s was an economic boom period following World War II. • Remember, the 1950s was a great time of consumerism. People were buying goods and products more than ever.

  3. Money to Spend • Where did they get the money to spend? • They saved money during the war. Also, many products were not available during the war because factories were making so many war supplies. • Consumers also used credit cards.

  4. New Industry • Advertising encouraged people to buy and American culture changed. • People had more money to spend which created more industries such as: • dry cleaners • restaurants • motels • fast food restaurants

  5. New Technology • New technology improved products greatly. • Better products = more products sold!

  6. The Automobile Improved • Changes to the automobile such as automatic transmissions, radial tires and power steering made them safer and easier to drive.

  7. Jet Engines Improved • Jet engines and pressurized cabins changed the airline industry by providing faster, more efficient air travel.

  8. Telephone Service Improved • Improved telephone service [long distance] and the new televisions changed communication, strengthening national and international connections.

  9. How cooooooool!  • Technologies such as air conditioning became more widely available, making the South a more attractive place to live and establish industries. • Air conditioning also moved the family off of the front porch and inside in front of the television.
