Great News!!! • All families attending today will receive a FREE student uniform shirt! • All parents attending today will earn their 1st Parent Academic hour just for being here today!! • Submit your Lunch Application by today and receive 2 extra hours or receive 1 hour if turned in by Friday, July 25th.

OUR MISSION The mission of Alliance Ouchi-O’Donovan 6-12 Complex is to provide students with a safe and supportive learning environment that promotes academic excellence, social responsibility, and college readiness. We respond to the developmental needs of middle grade learners by maximizing the potential of all students and building a sense of community to foster success at higher educational levels.

  6. Counselor: Ms. Rodriguez • Assist students who may be experiencing academic and social-emotional stress • Goal: Improve school environment and increase academic performance How can students meet with me? • Self referral • Parent referral • Teacher or staff referral

Services Offered For students: Students may see the counselor for small group and individual counseling where they can receive assistance with a variety of concerns and problems, including: • Friendship • Problem Solving • Academic Improvement • Anger Management • Motivation • Grief and loss • Self esteem • Conflict Resolution • College Awareness

  8. Services Offered For parents: Parents are free to call the counselor at any time for a meeting if they have academic, social or personal concerns about their child. The counselor can help in the following ways: • Academic progress updates • Parent conferences • Parent education workshops • Arrange small group or individual counseling • Provide outside referrals

Common Core Transition All schools will follow Common Core State Standards starting Fall 2014 • Includes rigorous content and application of knowledge through higher-order thinking skills • Performance-based collaborative activities and assessments • Integrated literacy across content areas including Science and Social Studies • Stronger emphasis on informational text, research and media skills

  10. What does this mean for your student? • All content area classes are based on Common Core Standards • Pearson Common Core online curriculum will be used in English and Math classes • Next Generation Science Standards will be used in Science classes • Smarter Balance testing in Spring 2015

  11. Drop Off and Pick Up • 54th Ave is a Loading and Unloading Zone- Students are to be dropped off and picked up on 54th Ave Only! (No Parking on 54th) • For safety reasons please Pull up closest to 5th Avenue to drop off and pick up students • Please do not park on 4th or 5th Ave as our Charter prohibits it. • Remember…our first bell rings at 7:40am. We recommend that students are dropped off by no later then 7:30am

  12. 1-3 Grant • In 2013 we received ½ million dollar grant to fund a 3 year computer initiative program which focuses on your child’s Science and College Readiness career. • All 8thGraders will participate in a school-wide Science project through Semester 1 and a College Readiness focused project in Semester 2 • STLs- Student Technology Leaders will continue guiding peers throughout the 2 projects. Will continue to use an I-Pad for classroom support and have an STL Advisory course.

  14. iPad Purpose • To be used for 2014-2015 transition into Common Core • iPad equipped with Pearson curriculum and viewed by O’Donovan as a textbook • iPad will prepare students for Smarter Balance Exam scheduled for May 2015

  15. iPad Policy • Students will use the iPad in appropriate ways which include not downloading unauthorized apps or accessing inappropriate material online • Students are not to deface the iPad or the case with writing, scratches or stickers • Students are not to leave their iPad unattended or allow another student to use it. • Violation of the Acceptable Use Policy may result in loss of iPad privileges

  16. iPad Policies: Damage • Students should report any damage to the immediate teacher for further evaluation. Responsibility will be determined after the tablet is sent for repair. • Students will be held responsible for ALL damage to their tablet including, but not limited to, broken screens, damaged metal casing, cracked plastic pieces, inoperability, etc. • There will be a one time $50.00 deductible that must be paid to cover damages. The entire cost must be paid if it occurs again.

  17. 8th Grade Requirements • Pass all courses w/ C or better Semester 1 and 2 in order to be promoted to HS • Students complete 10 Community Service Hours by May 29th • All fees paid and books returned to school by June 6, 2015 *Promotional Ceremony- Thurs, June 11, 2015

Attendance Policy • First class begins at 7:45 a.m. • Students should be in their seats and ready to work by 7:45 a.m. • Last class ends at 3:30 p.m. (M, T, Th, F) & 1:30 pm each Wednesday • GOOD ATTENDANCE IS REQUIRED (Not to exceed 9 unexcused absences in a year) • REPORTING STUDENT ILLNESS (Up to 2 days to clear absences) • STUDENTS MUST BE ON TIME DAILY • DETENTIONS FOR TARDIES (30 minute detention issued for students who arrive after 7:45)

  20. Protocol for Excessive Absences • 2 unexcused Absences = parent conference w/ counselor • 3 unexcused absences = P.C w/ Asst. Principal & Observation Contract • 4unexcused absences = P.C w/ Principal & Final Attendance Contract • 5 unexcused absences = Withdrawal from the 6-8 complex ***Tracked on a Semester Bases***

  21. Student Handbook Expectation: All students are expected to carry their agenda books on a daily basis. Also, HW is expected to be written in the student’s handbook on a daily basis. All students will receive a free handbook on Monday, August 11th. Lost or stolen handbooks must be replaced. Replacement cost- $10

  24. POLICY FOR ELECTRONICS • CELL PHONES MUST REMAIN TURNED OFF AND IN BACKPACKS • SCHOOL IS NOT IN ANY WAY RESPONSIBLE FOR LOST OR STOLEN ITEMS • ELECTRONICS WILL BE CONFISCATED IF SEEN OR HEARD DURING SCHOOL HOURS • WE STRONGLY ENCOURAGE STUDENTS TO NOT BRING VALUABLE ITEMS TO SCHOOL

  26. Parent Volunteer Hours • All O’Donovan Parents are required to complete 40 parent volunteer hours. • Volunteer Hours are to be completed by Friday, May 29th. Volunteer Hour Opportunities: - Attend Parent Workshops - Attend Parent Conferences - Serve as a PE Aide - Volunteer for School Beautification events - Sign and Return Documents - Supervision in the morning, lunch after school
