CROSS COUNTRY Cross Country rally in Easteurope developed comparing recently, but Latvia is one from the rare states, in which regular state Championships take place in a Cross Country rally. Already in 1995, only four years since Latvia returned status of a sovereign state, in the Latvia motor-car federation the structure Cross Country (4x4) commission was created, what began guidance of locality carsport processes and development. After two years, in the year 1997 a commission first time arranged the series of competitions with a general name "the cup of trackless star", but already in the following year the first Latvia championship in the Cross Country rally took place . In the end of 2001 was accepted a decision to try to use in arranging of competitions and in prepare of sport motor-car the FIA standards. In the following year was created the "Latvia Cross Country team, and the Latvian sportsmen maked debut in the FIA World cup event "Master Rallye", but one crew got for the 17. place in overall classification the reward for the most good debutants from Rene Metge. The further purposes of the Latvia drivers were high - start in the legendary Dakar marathonrally. Through an incomplete year in guidance of the double European titleholder for the Off Road Andris Dambis in Latvia was constructed the prototype of original construction Cross Country rally car "Oscar" . In August 2003 in the international debut of "Oscar" in "Rallye d'Orient" Andris Dambis came in high fifth place. Through five months the three constructed "Oscars" maintained the Dakara marathon verification successful, but Andris Dambis/Ainars Princis became for the most good rally debutants. CROSS COUNTRY The growing popularity of Cross Country rally, level of the national championship and achievement of our drivers and technicians in the worlds events, induced also in Latvia to arrange the competitions of an international scale. The first international Cross Country rally "Latvian Baja" took place in year 2004 from 28. to 30. May and collected mainly domestic locality driver masters, but, thanking sympathy of Germany and Estonian motorcyclists, "Latvian Baja" obtained indeed an international value. The positive estimation of foreign observers, especially confession of the organizer of the FIA World cup events organization "Chamfer the Metge Concept" representative Charl Cuper, was a large stimulus to continue the begun work. The second Cross Country rally "Latvian Baja 2005", what took place from 1. to 3. July 2005, already attracted participants from the five states: Latvia, Lithuania, Byelorussia, Czekh and Germany. In an intence, fight the Dakar rally participants Janis Naglis / Aleksandrs Innus won with Mitsubishi Pajero excelling strong "Riga RRT" Oscar crews,. The experiencing organizers team work seriously, that Cross Country rally "Latvian Baja 2006", what will take place from June 30. to 2. July 2006, be arranged yet professional and collect a high-quality participant. The purpose of the organizers is to perfect the Cross Country rally "Latvian Baja", that do it for the largest and international most considerable car sport event in Baltija and in the future declare the FIA European cup event. CROSS COUNTRY The Cross Country rally "Latvian Baja" is traditional arranged in a summer bloom, when Latvia nature is especially luxurious, and there is possibility for the sportsmen to injoy the most various route coverages and to show the efficiency in different driving circumstances. The largest part of driving between the special stages, different to last year, will go on classical rally gravel roads. Both sportsmen and technical personnel there will be possibility to look the life in provincial towns and countryside of Latvia. In same queue the route of the special stages will stretch through the forests of the mixed trees, areas of bushes, as also meadows. There will be some narrow and twisty roads, but the drivers will demonstrate theyr craft to drive the car in sand, turfy swamps and in overcome of fords of the rivers. The "Latvian Baja" feature is often in the variable route circumstances, which hold the drivers in tension in all time of competitions. In the first year the total distance of the "Latvian Baja" was 546 km, from which 284 km was the special stages. In the past year distance was extended till more than 700 km, but length of the special stages exceeded 500 km. Also the "Latvian Baja 2006" distance length will be approximate the same, and this conform with the FIA standards for Baja Cross Country rallies. CROSS COUNTRY The Headquarter of the Cross Country rally "Latvian Baja" traditionaly will find in the middle of Eastlatvia, in the hospitable Madonas city, but routes will go hrough a few administrative territories. For Cross Country rally guests from Europe, especially for equipment delivery to Latvia we can advise to use the sea line from Germany, there are two harbor cities in Latvia - the capital Riga, and Ventspils with ferry lines. Madona connect with ports the main state motorways: Riga - Pļaviņas - Madona (180 km); Ventspils - Riga - Pļaviņas - Madona (370 km); There is possibility to use the air traffic also, there is in Riga the largest air-port in Baltija, and the direct trips connect Riga with a few large European air-ports. It is possible to use also ouverland routs through Poland and Lithuania. Latvias participation in European Union provides free move of the populations of its acceding countries, but the ouverland road will be the longest and most wearing.
