  11. Penis curvature

  12. Scrotum • Varies with temperature

  13. Testes • Asymmetrical • Left usually lower • Heat reduces sperm production • Best at 93 degrees

  14. Seminiferous tubules (Within testes) • Site of sperm production • Interstitial (Leydig’s) cells produce androgens

  15. Seminiferous tubules

  16. Epididymis • Storage of sperm

  17. Cremasteric reflex • Cremasteric muscle

  18. Cryptorchidism • Undescended testis • Prevents sperm production - too warm

  19. Vas Deferens • Moves sperm from scrotum to ejaculatory duct • Within prostate gland

  20. Seminal vesicle • At end of each vas deferens • Alkaline fluid

  21. Seminal fluid (semen) • 70% = Seminal vesicles • 30% = Prostate gland • 1% = Sperm • 1 teaspoon • 200-500 million sperm per ejaculation

  22. Cowpers (bulbourethral) glands • Distilate of love • Contains active, healthy sperm

  23. Course of sperm • Testes • Epididymis • Vas Deferens • Urethra

  24. Erection • Process of tumescence • Morning erections • Related to • REM sleep • Rapid eye movement • 90 minute cycle • Dreaming about lover • Lover kissing while asleep • Not related to a full bladder

  25. Ejaculation • Dry orgasm • Before puberty • 2 phases • Emission • Fluid in ejaculatory duct • Expulsion • Semen expelled

  26. Retrograde ejaculation • Semen expelled into bladder • May result from • Prostate surgery • Certain drugs • Congenital abnormality

  27. Male cancers • Testicular cancer • One of the most common cancers among young men - 15-34 age group • Survival rate very high if detected early • Genital self-exam recommended • To identify early symptoms • Lumps on testes

  28. Prostate cancer • Second leading cause of cancer deaths among men • Detected by • Digital rectal exam • Blood test (PSA test) • Ultrasound

  29. Male sexual concerns • Penis size • Not related to sexual satisfaction • Possibly diameter rather than length • Small flaccid penis usually increases more during erection than larger flaccid penis • Text does not give size information

  30. Penis size

  31. Penis size concern

  32. Circumcision • Cervical cancer - higher in women having sex with uncircumcised men • Vaginal infections - May increase in women who have sex with uncircumcised men due to bacteria under the foreskin • Uncircumcised men - more likely to become infected with HIV through heterosexual intercourse than circumcised men.

  33. Male Kagel exercises • Locate PC. Muscle by stopping flow of urine • Better ejaculatory control • Similar to female Kagel exercises
