  3. Vaginal Delivery • What is it? • How frequent are they conducted?

  4. Vaginal Delivery CONT. Pros: Cons: Painful Vaginal injuries Incontinence • Hospital stay • Hysterectomy less likely • Less NICU admittance

  5. Vaginal Delivery CONT. • Best for mother and baby • Low risk for death • Easier to breastfeed

  6. Vaginal Delivery CONT. • Some adverse effects on mother and child • Mother: • pelvic floor damage • Child: • Brachial plexus injury

  8. Cesarean Section-Social Aspects • Increase around the world (esp. developed countries) • China at epidemic rate (50%) • Saved lives, but now done unnecessarily

  11. VBAC CONT. • Risks: • Scar re-opens • Labor stops or fetal complications • Uterine problems • Ruptures • May need a Hysterectomy

  12. VBAC CONT. • Physicians’ point of view • Less blood loss, fewer infections, no uterine scars • 30% of hospitals offer VBAC • Insurance companies wary

  13. Water Birth- General Information • Contractions only or Contractions and Birth • Options for location • Hospital or Home • Amniotic fluid for 9 months more natural to be born in water

  14. Water Birth- Social Aspects • Lack of formal research on benefits and risks • Experiences vary per mother • Debates of potential choke/drown occurrence in newborns

  17. Home Births CONT. • When to consider home birth: • Low-risk pregnancy • Do not want medication • Comforts of home • When NOT to consider home birth: • Diabetic mother • Past preterm labor • Not supported by partner

  18. Home Births CONT. • Sometimes a hospital transfer may be in order, why? • Premature rupturing • Fetal distress • Hemorrhage

  21. Hypnobirthing- General Information • Also known as the Mongan Method • Type of natural childbirth • Emphasis: pregnancy and birth • Technique taught through class

  22. Hypnobirthing- General Information • Discourages intervention • Self-hypnosis • Relaxed, but in control • Not in a trance or sleeping • Seeks to eliminate mother’s fear and anxiety

  23. Hypnobirthing-Social Aspects • National Health Service (NHS) is studying the effectiveness Hypnobirthing • ~60% of women use some sort of pain relief while giving birth • Thus far proven to be effective with ¼ of all births • Critics: should not be used in place of pain relief
