  1. 4th LHC Crab Cavity Workshop Summary of session on « Schedule & Future Outlook…»

  2. Other Crab Cavity Applications F. Zimmermann • Crabbing of colliding beams at the IP - improving geometric overlap - boosting beam-beam tune shift - luminosity leveling - avoiding off-center collisions from beam loading → HL-LHC, RR LHeC, RL LHeC, HE-LHC, eRHIC,… • Off-momentum cleaning → HL-LHC • Bunch compression → PDPWA

  3. Crab cavities in future lepton-hadron colliders ~2 MV at ~1.5 GHz ~4 MV at ~0.8 GHz? ~20 MV at ~0.4 GHz ~200 MV at ~0.4 GHz?? V. Litvinenko, IPAC10

  4. Field quality Preliminary analysis R. Calaga, E. Jensen … but modulated by synchrotron motion Key question ! Could also guide the choice of cavity type

  5. Development and implementation planning (1/3) E. Jensen HL-LHC Project and the Proposed Design Study “HiLumi LHC” Collaboration Board Advisory Committee Project Office: Resource manager Technical coordinators Project Coordinator Steering Committee R&D on enabling technologies Design Studies Technical Design WP2 WPn French “Grand Emprunt” EuCARD WP1 Total HL-LHC: 500 M€ Total HiLumi LHC: 27 M€ US-LARP Jpk 27/4/2010

  6. Development and implementation planning (2/3) Choice of solution(s) for HL-LHC E. Jensen HL-LHC Project and the Proposed Design Study “HiLumi LHC” FP7 Design Study framework plus: new cryoplant IR4, RF power systems, LLRF, ...

  7. Development and implementation planning (3/3) E. Jensen For 8 cavities If Compact CC’s are selected: Cavities alone: 30 MCHF, 7.1 FTE∙66 months (40 FTEy) Total « ballpark » estimate: 80 MCHF + 15 man.years Large uncertainty! If elliptical crab cavities have to be built: Cavities alone (???): 12 MCHF, 10 FTE∙24 months (20 FTEy)

  8. Comments (personal) on planning • At the level of the HL-LHC Project, need to outline: • The different possibilities (e.g. Crab Cavities) with their own roadmaps • Specifications / beam performance • The milestones for decisions • Within the Crab Cavity work programme, need to clarify quickly: • The precise purposes of the beam tests in the SPS • The schedule and the procedure for deciding which cavity should be tested in the SPS • The final system specifications (deflecting field, direction of kick (H/V), dimensions, acceptable non-linearities, impedance, machine protection requirements…) • Possibility to run for physics with a not operational cavity
