  2. 2011 Challenge Grant Program • Commercial Trials: 15 trials, 12 varieties/clones, ~116 acres, $10,500 in grants • Russets: Classic Russet, AF3362-1 • Chippers/RW’s: AF2291-10, B1992-106, Lamoka, Waneta • RW & Yellows: AF0338-17 (also out-of-field chipper),AF2574-1 • Reds: Dakota Jewel, Modoc, NY136 • Specialty AF4659-12 (fingerling type, yellow-fleshed)

  3. 2011 Russet Trial, St. Agatha, MEPlanted June 8; Vinekilled 100 days after planting; Harvested October 11 Data are presented for selected clones (10 varieties and clones appeared in this trial). Overall rank in the trial is presented in parentheses.

  4. 2011 Russet Trial, St. Agatha, MEPlanted June 8; Vinekilled 100 days after planting; Harvested October 11 Data are presented for selected clones (10 varieties and clones appeared in this trial). Dec fry color is an Agtron score run on chips and calibrated for chipping evaluations.

  5. Russets, 2011 Results • Promising • Classic Russet • AF3001-6 • AF3362-1 • Many more coming …. • Clones which did not do well in 2011: • Premier Russet • AF3317-15 • Russet Norkotah Classic Russet AF3001-6 AF3362-1

  6. Chippers, 2011 Results • Promising • Lamoka (NY139) • Waneta (NY138) • AF0338-17 (out-of-field) • AF4157-6 • B1992-106 (Florida) • Many more coming …. Lamoka (NY139) Waneta (NY138)

  7. Fresh Market, 2011 Results • Promising • AF0338-17 • AF2574-1 • AF4013-3 • MSQ086-3 • Lehigh (NY126) • Many more coming …. AF0338-17 AF2574-1

  8. Reds and Specialty, 2011 Results • Promising • Modoc • B2152-17 • Lehigh • Yukon Gem • AF4013-3 • Many more coming …. Modoc Yukon Gem

  9. 2011 Varietal Response to PostemergenceMetribuzin -- Metribuzin Sensitivity Screening Percent yield loss was calculated by comparing linuron (PE) versus linuron (PE) plus metribuzin (POST, 0.5 lbs ai/A ) treatments

  10. 2011 Late Blight Mgt Exp Aroostook Research Farm, Presque Isle September 7, 2011 susceptible variety August 11, 2011

  11. 2011 Late Blight Management with Resistant VarietiesAroostook Research Farm, Presque Isle, ME • Standard Fungicide Program • 13 chlorothalonil applics @ 1 to 1.5 pts/A (e.g. Bravo), 15.5 pts • 2 tin applications @ 2.5 oz/A (e.g. Agri Tin), 5 oz • 1 cymoxanil @ 3.0 oz/A (e.g. Curzate), 3 oz • 1 mandipropamid+difenoconazole @ 7 oz/A (e.g. Revus Top), 7 oz • Reduced Fungicide Program • Skipped two applications in July, two in August, one in September • 7 chlorothalonil applics @ 1 to 1.5 pts/A (e.g. Bravo), 8.5 pts • 2 tin applications @ 2.5 oz/A (e.g. Agri Tin), 5 oz • 1 mandipropamid+difenoconazole @ 7 oz/A (e.g. Revus Top), 7 oz

  12. Late Blight Infection of Potato Foliage, AUDPC (Late Blight Mgt Exp, 2011) ** significant variety, fungicide program, and variety x fungicide program effects at .01.

  13. 2011 Late Blight Mgt with Resistant Varieties and Fewer Chemical Sprays Aroostook Research Farm

  14. 2011 Nitrogen Rate x Harvest Date Exp, Aroostook Research Farm, Presque Isle • Russet Burbank, Defender, AF3001-6, AF3317-15 • 0, 60, 120, 180, and 240 lbs N per acre • Vinekill at 105 and 120 days after planting (DAP) • 180 lbs/A maximized yield on this site • % 10 oz continued to increase and specific gravity continued to decrease as N rate increased. • Defender and AF3001-6 had higher yields than Russet Burbank and AF3317-15. • Russet Burbank had very high hollow heart incidence. Late blight caused tuber rot problems in AF3001-6.

  15. 2011 Nitrogen Rate x Harvest Date Exp, Aroostook Research Farm, Presque Isle • Nitrogen rate response continued …. • The response curves were similar for Russet Burbank and AF3317-15. Defender and AF3001-6 required less N to reach maximum yield (~60 lbs/A less in this experiment). AF3317-15 left, Defender, right. Above: low N. Below: high N.

  16. 2010-11 PVY Susceptibility and Symptom Expression Exp • 3 standard varieties (RB, RN, NorWis) and 6 test clones (AF2291-10, AF2574-1, AF3001-6, AF3317-15, AF3325-2, and AF3362-1) were planted in a small-plot, replicated, PVYo inoculated experiment at Aroostook Research Farm in Presque Isle. • Symptom expression was evaluated • ELISA used to test background infection • Tubers were collected to test PVY spread. Symptoms were determined visually and using ELISA in the 2011 plant back plots.

  17. PVY Susceptibility and Symptom Expression, 2010-2011 • Resistant • Norwis (check) R • AF2574-1 MR? • Susceptible, Good Symptoms • AF2291-10 MS • AF3317-15 MS • R. Burbank S • AF3001-6 S • AF3362-1 (late symp.) S • AF4040-2 S • Susceptible, Weak Symptoms • AF3325-1 (dropped from program) • R. Norkotah (OK in 2010; weak in 2011) • TBD • AF0338-17 2010-2011 PVY Susceptibility Plant-backs Mosaic expression AF3362-1
