  1. Security Guard Training Security guard training is vital to ensuring that businesses, schools, banks, and other areas such as power plants and government buildings are well protected from theft, vandalism, and other crimes. Most training of security guards depends on the employer and their needs. In addition, there are usually two different types of security guards – armed and unarmed. Keep in mind though; it is difficult to go too much into specifics as each state/locality/employer may have different requirements to legally become certified as a security guard. Let’s look at what type of training is needed to get into the security field. Armed Security Guard Training For locations or employers requiring armed security guards, the training requirements are likely to be more stringent and thorough. You will have to become trained and licensed on the use of firearms, which will involve classroom and practical experience. Most armed security guards are also trained on how to disarm and detain intruders or criminals as well, and you must learn how to do so safely and legally. As far as education requirements go, you may only need a high school diploma, but some employers may require a degree of some kind or a criminal justice degree specifically. High

Unarmed Security Guard Training Most unarmed security guards do not have to endure rigorous testing or receive any special certifications. Many employers only require a high school diploma or GED. Having previous experience in the field or experience in law enforcement is always beneficial. You may go through a company provided training course or have to accompany an experienced guard to gain the skills required of your employer. Skills and Requirements Security guards are responsible for a variety of things depending on their location and employer. Most security guards are protecting property and people from theft, vandalism, and other safety issues. Being able to handle high-pressure emergency situations is critical. Also, many of the tasks that security guards handle are like law enforcement. You may have to keep logs, write reports of incidents, assist in emergency procedures, and detain trespassers or violators. Some security guards man booths and record vehicle activity or you may have to patrol areas on foot or by vehicle, coordinating with other guards many times. Additionally, you may be required to pass certain fitness requirements in order to display the ability to handle some of these high pressure or dangerous situations. Conclusion If you are seeking to become a security guard, do yourself a favor and research requirements in your location to make sure you will take all the correct steps to ensure employment.
