  2. Vocabulary • Expanded- write the value of each digit • Digit- symbols used to show numbers • Value- place of digit in number determines • Place value- position of a digit in a number • Period- group of 3 digits in a number, start from right, separated by comma

  3. Notes 9 4 5 , 8 7 2 , 0 3 6 6-ones, 3-tens, 0-hundreds – ones period 2-thousands, 7-ten thousands, 8-hundred thousands – thousands period 5-millions, 4-ten millions, 9-hundred millions – millions period (Notice the pattern)

  4. Notes 945,872,036 • Nine hundred forty-five, eight hundred seventy-two, thirty-six • 8 is in the hundred thousands place • Value is 800,000

  6. Vocabulary • Equivalent decimal- name the same amount

  8. Notes 3.902 • Three and nine hundred two thousandths • 9 is in the tenths place • Value is 0.9 (nine tenths) • 3 is in the ones place • Value is 3

  9. Compare and Order Compare and order whole numbers and decimals

  10. Vocabulary • Compare- decide which number is more or less • Order- arrange numbers from least to greatest or greatest to least

  11. Notes Write the numbers and line up places Begin at left and compare Ex. 45,678 45,922 4 is =, 5 is =, 9 is bigger than 6 in the hundreds place, so 45,922 > 45,678

  12. Notes Ex. 3.4, 3.399, 2.2 These numbers are in order from greatest to least 2 in ones place is least 4 in tenth place is greatest (3.400, 3.399, 2.200) Add zeros to end of decimal to write equivalent decimals
