Middle School Students and Cooperative Learning • Middle school students need to be part of a group • Middle school students thrive in a socially interactive environment • Need to develop interpersonal and social skills (NMSA, 2010) • Language is the central mechanism of learning and social interactions are necessary to internalize this learning (Vygotsky, 1978) • Educational organizations (NCTM, NSTA, NCTE, NCSS, NMSA, IRA) advocate interactive approach to learning
